Notes:
Producer: Domaine Jérôme Chézeaux is based in Premeaux-Prissey, just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, and has been under Jérôme Chézeaux's direction since 1993. Today, his daughter Lyse Chézeaux plays an increasingly important role in both the vineyards and cellar, bringing additional precision while maintaining the family's traditional philosophy. The domaine farms approximately 11 hectares across an enviable collection of appellations that includes holdings in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, and several Premier Crus. Vineyard work emphasizes low yields, careful canopy management, and manual harvesting, while cellar practices remain intentionally restrained. Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts following complete destemming, and élevage is designed to support rather than overshadow the wines. The domaine has quietly become one of the better values in the Côte de Nuits, producing wines that consistently outperform their profile while remaining true to the character of each appellation. In recent vintages, critics have noted a continued rise in quality, particularly under the growing influence of Lyse Chézeaux.
Vineyard: The village Nuits-Saint-Georges is produced from several estate parcels situated on the lower and mid-slopes surrounding the commune, including fruit from Les Charbonnières and Aux Saints-Juliens. These vineyards are planted on classic clay-limestone soils over fractured limestone bedrock, providing the structure and mineral backbone that define the appellation. Compared with neighboring Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges generally produces wines with greater earthiness, firmer tannins, and darker fruit, though Chézeaux's interpretation consistently leans toward refinement rather than power. Mature vines and naturally modest yields contribute additional concentration while preserving freshness and aromatic lift. The 2024 vintage, despite its reduced crop, produced wines of bright fruit, balanced ripeness, and classical proportions.
Winemaking: Grapes are harvested entirely by hand before careful sorting and complete destemming. Fermentation proceeds naturally with indigenous yeasts, followed by élevage of approximately 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with only moderate use of new oak. The objective is to preserve the purity of Pinot Noir and the character of the vineyard rather than emphasize extraction or barrel influence. The wines are bottled with minimal intervention after sufficient time to integrate fruit, tannin, and oak. The resulting style favors balance, freshness, and transparency over sheer weight, allowing the vineyard to remain at the forefront.
Food Pairing: Pair with roast duck, beef tenderloin, coq au vin, herb-roasted pork loin, mushroom risotto, veal chops, roast chicken, or aged Comté. The wine's combination of vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and earthy complexity also complements dishes featuring wild mushrooms, truffles, or slow-roasted game birds.
