Notes:
Perhaps the greatest wine from this estate, “Les Suchots” sits on deep and heavy clay at 270 meters altitude. A veritable tsunami of swoon-worthy Vosne spice ushers in fruit both impressively broad and sumptuously precise, yet somehow everything remains focused and fine—a tour de force, vintage after vintage. Chezeaux owns a bit more than one-third of a hectare in this elite lieu-dit which sits opposite legendary Richebourg and Romanée Saint Vivant. Sweet dark berries, spices, flowers and mint are some of the notes that are woven into a finessed fabric of notable elegance. The “Suchots” is one of the most refined and sensual wines in the Chezeaux lineup.
Producer: Domaine Jérôme Chézeaux is based in Premeaux-Prissey, where the family has cultivated vineyards for several generations. Jérôme Chézeaux assumed control of the domaine in 1993, and today works alongside his daughter Lyse Chézeaux, whose growing influence has coincided with a noticeable rise in the estate's reputation. The domaine farms roughly 11 hectares across some of the Côte de Nuits' most prestigious appellations, including holdings in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vougeot, and Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru. Vineyard work emphasizes sustainable farming, careful pruning, naturally low yields, and hand harvesting. In the cellar, the philosophy is traditional and restrained. All fruit is completely destemmed before fermenting with indigenous yeasts, followed by élevage in French oak with moderate use of new barrels. The objective is to preserve purity and vineyard expression rather than emphasize extraction or oak influence. Chézeaux has quietly become one of the better value domaines in the Côte de Nuits, producing wines that consistently reflect their appellations with clarity, precision, and excellent aging potential.
Vineyard: Les Suchots is among the most celebrated Premier Crus of Vosne-Romanée and occupies a privileged position between Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Richebourg, and Échézeaux, surrounded by some of Burgundy's greatest Grand Crus. As the largest Premier Cru in Vosne-Romanée, it has long been considered one of the village's most complete vineyards and is frequently cited as producing wines that approach Grand Cru quality in exceptional vintages. The vineyard is planted on classic limestone and clay soils with excellent drainage, allowing vines to produce fruit of remarkable concentration while preserving freshness and aromatic detail. Les Suchots is renowned for expressing the hallmark qualities of Vosne-Romanée: lifted floral perfume, exotic spice, silky tannins, and exceptional finesse. Compared with the firmer style of neighboring Nuits-Saint-Georges, Suchots consistently delivers greater aromatic complexity and a more velvety texture while retaining the structure necessary for long-term aging.
Winemaking: Grapes are harvested entirely by hand before careful sorting and complete destemming. Fermentation proceeds naturally with indigenous yeasts, followed by gentle extraction designed to preserve perfume and texture rather than maximize concentration. The wine matures for approximately 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with roughly 20–30% new oak, allowing the vineyard's natural elegance to remain at the forefront. Bottling occurs after sufficient élevage to integrate fruit, tannin, and oak without sacrificing freshness or transparency. Chézeaux's restrained approach complements the inherently refined personality of Les Suchots, producing a wine defined by balance, aromatic precision, and longevity rather than sheer power.
Food Pairing: Pair with roast duck breast, squab, veal tenderloin, beef Wellington, roast lamb, mushroom risotto, pigeon, or aged Comté. The wine's silky texture, vibrant acidity, and layered spice also make it an outstanding partner for dishes featuring black truffle, chanterelles, or delicate reductions based on Pinot Noir.
