Notes:
This vaunted 1er cru sits on a vein of limestone and marl in southern Vosne- Romanée. Chezeaux produces a wine that marries the exotic spice and succulent fruit of Vosne-Romanée with the mineral power of Nuits-Saint-Georges in hugely appealing fashion. This wine is consistently one of my favorites from the domaine. Chezeaux owns about four-tenths of a hectare in Chaumes, superbly situated just beneath La Tache and Aux Malconsorts. We have the rare privilege to access a tiny allocation of this wine annually. This “Les Chaumes” is wonderfully cool and introspective. With time in the glass, plums, black cherries, mint, violets and spices emerge, adding a wonderful sense of texture and depth. Elements of firmness underpin the fruit, suggesting the wine has a very bright future. Sweet red flowers, mint and spices add complexity on the finish. We were awestruck by its energy and tension.
Producer: Domaine Jérôme Chézeaux is a family-owned estate in Premeaux-Prissey, just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, where Jérôme Chézeaux has overseen winemaking since 1993. In recent years, his daughter Lyse Chézeaux has assumed an increasingly important role, contributing to the domaine's steady rise in quality while maintaining its traditional philosophy. The estate farms roughly 12 hectares across some of the Côte de Nuits' most sought-after appellations, including Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vougeot, and Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru. Vineyard work emphasizes sustainable farming, naturally low yields, manual harvesting, and careful fruit selection. In the cellar, intervention remains minimal. Grapes are completely destemmed before fermenting with indigenous yeasts, followed by patient élevage in French oak with restrained use of new barrels. The objective is to preserve the individuality of each climat rather than impose a heavy-handed house style. Once considered an insider's domaine, Chézeaux has developed a loyal following among Burgundy collectors for producing wines that consistently overdeliver relative to their price and reputation.
Vineyard: Les Chaumes occupies one of the finest positions in Vosne-Romanée, lying directly below La Tâche Grand Cru and adjacent to Aux Malconsorts. The vineyard's gently sloping, limestone-rich soils with a higher proportion of clay produce wines that combine Vosne-Romanée's signature perfume with a touch more generosity and breadth than many neighboring Premier Crus. Compared with Les Suchots, Les Chaumes often offers broader fruit, softer tannins, and greater accessibility in its youth while retaining the ability to age gracefully. Chézeaux farms approximately 0.40 hectares, superbly situated beneath La Tâche, where mature vines naturally limit yields and contribute both concentration and complexity. The vineyard consistently expresses floral aromatics, exotic spice, and a refined, silky texture that exemplify the village.
Winemaking: Grapes are harvested entirely by hand before careful sorting and complete destemming. Following a brief cold pre-fermentation maceration, fermentation proceeds with indigenous yeasts using gentle extraction techniques designed to preserve aromatic precision and texture. The wine is matured for approximately 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels, of which roughly 30% are new. This restrained élevage provides structural support without overwhelming the fruit or masking the vineyard character. The resulting wine emphasizes purity, balance, and transparency, allowing the floral spice, mineral tension, and velvety texture of Les Chaumes to remain the defining characteristics of the finished wine.
Food Pairing: Pair with roast duck breast, pigeon, veal tenderloin, rack of lamb, mushroom risotto, roast quail, beef Wellington, or aged Comté. The wine's floral aromatics, silky tannins, and vibrant acidity also pair beautifully with dishes featuring black truffles, morel mushrooms, or delicate Pinot Noir reductions.
