Notes:
- Producer: Domaine Ramonet’s reputation is most closely associated with Chardonnay, but red Burgundy remains a meaningful part of the estate, accounting for roughly 30% of its production. The domaine was established by Pierre Ramonet in the late 1920s and is now directed by the third generation, brothers Jean-Claude and Noël Ramonet. Today the estate encompasses approximately 17 hectares across Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, Bouzeron and Pernand-Vergelesses. Its red holdings include Chassagne-Montrachet at both village and Premier Cru level, with Clos Saint-Jean among the domaine’s principal Premier Cru Pinot Noir bottlings. Vineyard work is based on sustainable practices, soil cultivation and controlled yields, with the stated goal of respecting the differences among the estate’s individual terroirs.
- Vineyard: Clos Saint-Jean is one of the historic Premier Cru vineyards of Chassagne-Montrachet and has long been associated with the red-wine side of the appellation. Located on the slope immediately above the village, the climat occupies a well-exposed position in the central part of Chassagne. Pinot Noir has deep roots here, and Clos Saint-Jean remains one of the important sources of Premier Cru red Chassagne today. Ramonet’s bottling is 100% Pinot Noir, providing a distinctly different expression of the village from the Chardonnay-based wines for which the domaine is best known. The combination of Premier Cru classification, established Pinot Noir plantings and Ramonet’s long history with red Chassagne makes Clos Saint-Jean an important part of the domaine’s red-wine range.
- Winemaking: The grapes are harvested by hand, as they are throughout Domaine Ramonet. The domaine describes its vinification as traditional, followed by maturation in oak barrels for approximately 12 to 18 months depending on the appellation. Vineyard work includes regular soil cultivation and controlled yields. For Clos Saint-Jean Rouge, this approach is applied to Pinot Noir from one of Chassagne’s established red-wine Premier Crus, with barrel élevage providing the maturation necessary for the wine’s structure to integrate before bottling. Ramonet’s continued production of Clos Saint-Jean, Clos de la Boudriotte and Morgeot also preserves an important part of Chassagne-Montrachet’s red-wine tradition alongside the domaine’s extensive Chardonnay program.
- Technical Details: 2022 vintage; 100% Pinot Noir; Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru AOC; Clos Saint-Jean; Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France; red; 750ml; 13.5% alcohol. The 2022 vintage combined a warm, dry growing season with a comparatively generous crop after the extremely small 2021 harvest. For Pinot Noir, the vintage produced ripe fruit while retaining sufficient freshness, and the best reds combine concentration with balance. Current listings for the exact Ramonet Clos Saint-Jean 2022 confirm the Premier Cru classification, Pinot Noir variety and 13.5% alcohol.
- Food Pairing: Premier Cru red Chassagne is particularly versatile at the table. Roast duck, veal, pork tenderloin, roast chicken and game birds are natural choices, while dishes built around mushrooms or lentils work well with Pinot Noir’s more savory side. With additional bottle age, the wine should also pair comfortably with richer preparations such as braised veal or roast guinea hen. A simple preparation that does not overwhelm the wine is particularly appropriate for showing the character of Clos Saint-Jean.
