Notes:
- Producer: Domaine Ramonet remains a family-run estate based in Chassagne-Montrachet, where Pierre Ramonet began assembling the domaine in the late 1920s. The estate grew substantially through carefully chosen vineyard acquisitions and today encompasses roughly 17 hectares across Chassagne-Montrachet and neighboring Côte de Beaune appellations. While the domaine’s international reputation is closely associated with Chardonnay, its production has always included Pinot Noir, preserving an important part of Chassagne’s red-wine tradition. Ramonet currently bottles several reds from the village, including Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge and the Premier Crus Clos de la Boudriotte, Clos Saint-Jean and Morgeot. These wines come from a village that historically had a much larger proportion of Pinot Noir than it does today and provide a different side of one of Chassagne-Montrachet’s most established domaines.
- Vineyard: Morgeot is one of the largest and most historically important Premier Cru sectors in Chassagne-Montrachet, occupying a substantial area south of the village. Unlike many of Chassagne’s best-known sites, Morgeot has a longstanding association with both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Its soils contain significant clay along with limestone and gravel, giving the site the capacity to produce structured, substantial red Burgundy. The vineyard generally faces east to southeast, providing good exposure while retaining the underlying freshness necessary for Pinot Noir. Morgeot’s scale also encompasses a number of individual lieux-dits, reflecting the complexity of this large Premier Cru area. Ramonet’s continued production of Morgeot Rouge maintains the historical connection between this southern section of Chassagne and Pinot Noir.
- Winemaking: The 2023 Morgeot Rouge is produced from Pinot Noir. Ramonet’s approach to its red wines is traditional, with the fruit harvested by hand and the grapes destemmed before fermentation. Extraction is handled carefully during maceration, followed by élevage in French oak barrels. This method is particularly appropriate to Morgeot, a vineyard capable of providing substantial natural structure and concentration without requiring aggressive extraction in the cellar. Barrel maturation allows the wine’s tannins and fruit to integrate while maintaining the underlying character of the vineyard. The domaine’s red-wine program follows the same parcel-focused approach found throughout the estate, with Morgeot bottled separately as one of Ramonet’s principal Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru reds.
- Technical Details: 2023 vintage; Pinot Noir; Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru AOC; Morgeot; Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France; red; 750ml; 13.5% alcohol. The 2023 Burgundy vintage produced a relatively generous crop following flowering and fruit set, with warm conditions later in the season bringing Pinot Noir to full maturity. For red Burgundy, the vintage is notable for combining ripe fruit with freshness rather than relying simply on concentration. In a site such as Morgeot, whose clay-rich soils naturally lend substance to Pinot Noir, that balance gives the wine both immediate presence and the structure for further development in bottle.
- Food Pairing: The depth and structure associated with Morgeot make this a natural match for roast duck, guinea hen, veal, pork loin and roast chicken. Mushroom dishes are particularly appropriate with Pinot Noir, as are traditional Burgundian preparations such as œufs en meurette. With bottle age, the wine should also work well with game birds and other savory preparations. Its combination of fruit, acidity and Premier Cru structure makes it versatile enough for richer dishes without requiring especially heavy sauces.
