Notes:
Producer: Chartogne-Taillet is a family-owned grower Champagne estate based in Merfy, a village in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, northwest of Reims. The family's viticultural history in the village dates to 1683, and today the domaine is led by Alexandre Chartogne, who took over the estate after working with Anselme Selosse. His approach centers on understanding the individuality of each vineyard, with particular attention to soil composition, farming, and the influence of different geological formations. Chartogne-Taillet has become especially well regarded for its parcel-specific Champagnes, including Les Barres, Orizeaux, Les Couarres, and Chemin de Reims. Cuvée Sainte-Anne serves as a broader expression of the estate's vineyards, bringing together several parcels to capture the character of Merfy as a whole.
Vineyard: Sainte-Anne draws from vineyards around Merfy, where a complex mixture of sand, clay, limestone, and chalk creates considerable variation from one parcel to another. These soils are central to the estate's identity, particularly the sandy limestone formations that contribute to the wine's mineral character and distinctive texture. The vines were planted between 1970 and 2009, with predominantly southern and southeastern exposures. Alexandre Chartogne works the vineyards with an emphasis on soil health, using traditional cultivation methods and careful management of individual parcels. Rather than selecting fruit from a single site, Sainte-Anne combines the characteristics of several vineyards, allowing the different soils of Merfy to contribute to the finished Champagne.
Winemaking: The Base 2023 Sainte-Anne is composed of 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, and 10% Pinot Meunier, incorporating approximately 40% reserve wines from previous harvests. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are aged for nine months in oak vessels before blending and bottling. Chartogne-Taillet uses barrels of different sizes, including 228-, 350-, and 2,000-liter formats, with a smaller portion of the reserve wines raised in tank. Individual parcels are vinified separately before being assembled into the final cuvée. The estate avoids filtration, preserving the wine's natural texture and the interplay between fruit, acidity, and mineral character. The result is a Champagne with generosity and depth, balanced by the freshness and precision associated with Merfy's distinctive soils.
Technical Details: This is a non-vintage Extra Brut Champagne with the 2023 harvest as its base year, presented in a 1.5-liter magnum. The blend includes reserve wines from earlier vintages. The combination of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier gives Sainte-Anne a balance of citrus freshness, red-fruit character, and rounded texture. Its fine mousse and mineral finish make it approachable upon release while providing the structure to develop further complexity with time.
Food Pairing: Sainte-Anne's combination of freshness, texture, and savory depth makes it particularly versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with oysters, scallops, grilled prawns, and other seafood, while its broader mid-palate can comfortably accompany roast chicken, pork tenderloin, or mushroom dishes. The Champagne's lively acidity also works well with richer preparations such as lobster with butter or creamy seafood risotto. The magnum format makes it an excellent choice for entertaining, offering enough wine for a larger gathering while maintaining the freshness and balance that make Sainte-Anne so enjoyable.
