Notes:
The NV Brut Cuvée Ste.-Anne (base 2023) is laced with hints of dried flowers, chamomile and spice. Open-knit and airy, with lovely mid-palate presence, the Ste.-Anne is a delight. Citrus, marzipan and chamomile build into the refined finish. In this release, the Ste.-Anne is on the more delicate side. This release is based on 2023, with reserve wines from 2022, 2020, 2019 and 2018. Dosage is 3.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: December 2025. - Vinous 91
- Producer: Chartogne-Taillet is based in Merfy, a historic winegrowing village in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, northwest of Reims. The Taillet family’s presence as growers in Merfy stretches back centuries, but the modern direction of the estate began when Alexandre Chartogne took over in 2006, following time spent working with Anselme Selosse. Alexandre’s approach is centered on understanding Merfy parcel by parcel: differences in soil, exposure, vine material and farming are treated individually rather than blended away from the outset. Each parcel can be vinified differently according to its character, and this attention to individual sites has made Chartogne-Taillet one of the most closely followed grower estates in Champagne. Sainte-Anne is especially important within the range because, unlike the domaine’s single-parcel bottlings, it is designed to bring these different pieces together and represent the broader identity of Merfy.
- Vineyard: Cuvée Sainte-Anne is a multi-parcel Champagne built around the vineyards of Merfy. The village is distinguished by sandy, limestone-influenced soils, and Chartogne describes the goal of Sainte-Anne as preserving the crystalline texture characteristic of this terroir. Rather than seeking uniformity between parcels, Alexandre vinifies them individually and then assembles them after élevage. This makes Sainte-Anne an excellent introduction to the domaine: the single-vineyard wines isolate individual sites, while Sainte-Anne brings multiple soils and exposures back together into a broader portrait of the village. The Base 2023 release is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier, giving the wine both the freshness and mineral definition of Chardonnay and additional depth from the red varieties.
- Winemaking: Alexandre’s approach to Sainte-Anne begins with separate vinification of individual parcels, using different vessels and élevage choices according to the needs of each site. The domaine specifically avoids filtration because Alexandre believes it changes the texture of the wines and alters the balance between richness and salinity. Sainte-Anne also incorporates reserve wines from earlier harvests, which the domaine uses to temper the energy of the younger base vintage while adding depth and continuity. For this Base 2023 release, Vinous reports reserve wines from 2022, 2020, 2019 and 2018. This multi-vintage construction is an important part of Sainte-Anne: it allows the wine to retain the energy of the current harvest while gaining additional complexity from several previous vintages.
- Technical Details: Base 2023; Champagne AOC; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier; 750ml; 12.5% alcohol. Vinous reports a 3.5 g/L dosage and December 2025 disgorgement for the Base 2023 release it reviewed. The blend incorporates reserve wines from 2022, 2020, 2019 and 2018. Vinous describes this edition as particularly delicate and airy, with dried flowers, chamomile and spice leading into citrus and marzipan, along with good mid-palate presence and a refined finish. It is a particularly useful bottle for understanding Chartogne-Taillet because it brings together the domaine’s parcel-focused philosophy in a single cuvée rather than isolating one individual vineyard.
- Food Pairing: Sainte-Anne’s combination of freshness, texture and low dosage makes it extremely versatile at the table. Oysters, scallops, sushi, grilled or roasted white fish, roast chicken and lighter mushroom dishes are all excellent options. Its chalky, saline character also makes it a natural partner for shellfish, while the additional breadth provided by Pinot Noir, Meunier and the reserve wines gives it enough substance to carry through an entire meal rather than serving solely as an aperitif.
