Notes:
The 2022 Extra-Brut Heurtebise is exquisite. Bright and wibront in the glass, the 2022 is so silly. The finesse of the mousse is immediately appedling, Pear, apricot, dried flowers and chamomile all grace the palate. Given the natural richness of the year, Alewander Chartogne bottled with a bit less sugar, a decision that paid off handsomely. The 2022 is magnificent. As always, the Hurtebise is a Champogne of tension energy and subtlety more than power. Vinous 96

- Producer: Chartogne-Taillet is based in Merfy, in the Massif de Saint-Thierry northwest of Reims, where the Taillet family has deep roots as winegrowers. Alexandre Chartogne took over the family domaine in 2006, following time spent working with Anselme Selosse. His work has centered on understanding Merfy vineyard by vineyard, with particular attention to differences in soil, subsoil, exposure and water availability. Rather than imposing one cellar approach across the range, individual parcels are treated according to their particular characteristics. Heurtebise is one of the clearest examples of that philosophy. It is a single-site, 100% Chardonnay Champagne whose character is closely tied to a very specific combination of sand, clay and sandstone—an unusual geological profile within Champagne.
- Vineyard: Heurtebise comes from the lieu-dit Les Heurtes Bises in Merfy, a broad, south-facing and notably windswept site. The entire lieu-dit covers approximately 5.81 hectares, of which Chartogne-Taillet farms around 1.67 hectares. The vines were planted between 1972 and 2010. Although the parcel itself contains Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier, Heurtebise is produced exclusively from Chardonnay. The geology is particularly distinctive: Thanetian calcareous sands mixed with silt and clay sit over a sandstone subsoil. The domaine directly connects that sandstone influence with the wine’s mineral tension and describes Heurtebise as having an angular, vibrant and crystalline texture. That combination of Chardonnay, southern exposure, wind and sandy soils over sandstone gives Heurtebise a very different personality from the broader, clay-driven Les Couarres despite the two vineyards being located within the same small village.
- Winemaking: The 2022 Heurtebise is 100% Chardonnay and is made as an Extra Brut. The fruit is harvested by hand, followed by spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and naturally occurring malolactic fermentation. Available information for the 2022 reports élevage primarily in 228-liter Burgundy barrels, followed by extended aging on the lees. The wine is neither fined nor filtered. The restrained dosage is particularly appropriate to the naturally generous 2022 vintage; Antonio Galloni specifically notes that Alexandre chose to bottle the wine with less sugar because of the vintage’s inherent richness. Rather than producing a powerful Blanc de Blancs, the resulting Champagne emphasizes finesse, tension and energy.
- Technical Details: 2022 vintage; 100% Chardonnay; Champagne AOC; Heurtebise, Merfy; Blanc de Blancs; Extra Brut; 750ml. The vines grow on a south-facing site with Thanetian calcareous sands, clay and silt over sandstone. The 2022 was produced with a particularly low dosage; current technical listings report approximately 2.4 g/L. Vinous describes the finished wine as bright and vibrant with an exceptionally silky mousse, showing pear, apricot, dried flowers and chamomile. More importantly, Galloni identifies the underlying personality of Heurtebise as one of tension, energy and subtlety rather than power—a description that fits closely with the domaine’s own emphasis on the site’s angular, crystalline texture and sandstone-derived minerality.
- Food Pairing: The combination of Chardonnay, low dosage, saline minerality and fine mousse makes Heurtebise particularly well suited to seafood. Oysters, scallops, langoustines, grilled sole, turbot and sushi would all be excellent matches. Its additional texture and barrel élevage also give it enough depth for roast chicken, creamy seafood preparations or aged Comté. This is a Champagne that can easily move from aperitif through the meal.
