Notes:
- Producer: Chartogne-Taillet is based in the village of Merfy in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, northwest of Reims. The domaine traces its history to the 15th century, while the modern estate was established in 1920 through the marriage of the Chartogne and Taillet families. Today, it is directed by Alexandre Chartogne, who assumed responsibility for the estate in 2006 after studying under Anselme Selosse. The domaine farms approximately 11 hectares, divided among more than 40 parcels in Merfy, with additional holdings in neighboring Chenay and Saint-Thierry. Vineyard work emphasizes soil health through regular plowing, cover crops, and parcel-specific farming. Each vineyard is harvested and vinified separately to preserve site identity before final blending.
- Vineyard: Cuvée Sainte-Anne is produced exclusively from vineyards in Merfy, making it a village expression rather than a regional blend. The Base 2019 release is composed of 50% Chardonnay and 50% red varieties, predominantly Pinot Noir, with reserve wines incorporated from previous harvests. Merfy's soils consist primarily of sandy limestone over chalk, with individual parcels contributing different textures and structural elements to the final blend. Alexandre Chartogne vinifies every parcel independently before assembling the cuvée, allowing each site to contribute to a wine intended to represent the village as a whole. The inclusion of reserve wines provides additional texture while maintaining the freshness of the base vintage.
- Winemaking: The Base 2019 release was vinified and aged entirely in oak, using 228-liter, 350-liter, and 2,000-liter barrels, with only a small portion of reserve wines maintained in stainless steel. Individual parcels are managed differently during élevage, including variations in barrel size and whether barrels are topped up, before blending. The wines are not filtered, preserving texture and structural integrity prior to bottling. The Base 2019 release was disgorged in June 2022 and finished with a 5 g/L Brut dosage. The dosage liqueur is produced from the same wine as the cuvée, maintaining continuity of style rather than introducing external sweetness.
- Technical Details: Champagne AOC; Base Vintage 2019; approximately 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir with a small proportion of Pinot Meunier depending on the vintage; fruit sourced exclusively from Merfy; reserve wines from multiple previous vintages; vinified and aged primarily in 228 L, 350 L, and 2,000 L oak barrels; no filtration; disgorged June 2022; 5 g/L dosage; Brut; approximately 12% alcohol.
- Food Pairing: Chartogne-Taillet recommends Cuvée Sainte-Anne as a versatile food wine because of its combination of richness and saline structure. It pairs well with shellfish, grilled fish, roast poultry, veal, mushroom dishes, and aged Comté, while its balance of fruit, acidity, and lees-derived texture also makes it suitable as an aperitif. The wine's moderate dosage and chalk-driven finish allow it to accompany both seafood and lighter meat preparations without overwhelming the food.
