The 2023 Chardonnay comes from vines planted in 2017. It opens with wafts of matchstick and crème brûlée that give way to quince paste, peach preserves and honey. The full-bodied palate is silky and expansive with well-integrated flint and oak spice. It’s balanced by bright acidity and has a long, layered finish. Wine Advocate 94
Witness Wines is a new project from managing partner Matt Felton and consulting winemaker Alban Debeaulieu. Grapes are sourced from the Witness Tree Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills, first planted to vines in 1982. Witness Tree fruit is widely sourced by winemakers in the Willamette Valley, and iterations can be found from Walter Scott, Bergstrom, Nicolas-Jay and others. “Since we make very little wine ourselves, we want to put these wines on the map,” Felton explains. The goal of Witness Wines, he says, “is to showcase the character of the vineyard, make wines of the highest caliber and express site first and foremost.” 2022 was the brand’s first vintage of Pinot Noir, while the 2023s in this report represent their first release of Chardonnay.
