Notes:

A restrained, indeed even timid nose grudgingly offers up its aromas of mineral reduction, citrus and white-fleshed fruit, all of which is trimmed in generous wood. The succulent but punchy medium-bodied flavors possess almost a painful level of intensity also with a pungent minerality that adds a sense of lift to the citrusy, youthfully austere and beautifully well-balanced finale. This could use better depth and it's not quite as refined but it too possesses ample development potential. Burghound 92 Outstanding!

Producer: Domaine J.A. Ferret is one of the historic estates of Pouilly-Fuissé, with a particularly important role in demonstrating the potential of individual vineyard sites within the appellation. The domaine was developed by Jeanne Ferret and later her daughter Colette, who were early proponents of vinifying and bottling specific parcels separately rather than treating Pouilly-Fuissé as a single blended wine. The estate was acquired by Maison Louis Jadot in 2008 and has continued to operate as a distinct domaine. Winemaker Audrey Braccini oversaw the 2020 vintage, maintaining the estate’s parcel-focused approach while further developing its vineyard practices. Tournant de Pouilly belongs to the domaine’s historic Cuvée Hors Classe range and comes from some of its oldest Chardonnay vines.
Vineyard: Le Tournant de Pouilly is a historic one-hectare holding divided between two parcels at the northern end of Fuissé, immediately bordering the hamlet of Pouilly. The gently sloping vineyard faces northeast and is now included within the Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru Les Reisses. Jean-Alfred Ferret planted the principal sections in 1955, 1963 and 1964, making these some of the oldest vines at the domaine. A separate 0.15-hectare section was replanted in 2018 but was still too young to be incorporated into this cuvée. The soils are deep, highly calcareous silty clay derived from pale Dogger marl, with relatively few stones. The limestone-rich terroir and cooler northeast exposure are important elements in the character and longevity of the wine. 2020 was the first vintage in which this historic site could carry Premier Cru status, following the recognition of Les Reisses as one of Pouilly-Fuissé’s newly classified Premier Cru climats.
Winemaking: The 2020 is 100% Chardonnay. Fermentation and the first stage of élevage took place in oak barrels for 10 months, with 20% new barrels and 80% barrels between one and three years old. The wine was then transferred to stainless steel with its fine lees for a further eight months, extending the total maturation considerably before bottling. This combination of barrel and stainless-steel élevage has long been part of the domaine’s approach to its top parcel selections, allowing the wine to develop in barrel before completing its maturation in a neutral vessel. The extended period on the lees is particularly significant for Tournant de Pouilly, adding texture while preserving the freshness associated with its northeast-facing, limestone-rich site.
Technical Details: 100% Chardonnay. Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru Les Reisses, Mâconnais, Burgundy. The historic Tournant de Pouilly selection comprises one hectare divided between two northeast-facing parcels. Principal vines were planted in 1955, 1963 and 1964. Deep, highly calcareous silty-clay soils derived from pale marl. Fermented and matured for 10 months in barrel, 20% new, followed by approximately eight months in stainless steel on the fine lees. 13.5% alcohol.
Food Pairing: The concentration and acidity of Tournant de Pouilly allow it to handle richer preparations while remaining particularly well suited to seafood. Turbot with beurre blanc or hollandaise, scallops, lobster, roasted sea bass and sole are excellent choices. It also works well with poultry, especially roast chicken or poularde with morels, and with veal in a light cream sauce. Mature Comté is an especially natural cheese pairing and is also specifically recommended by the domaine for this cuvée.
