Notes:
- Producer: Maison Roche de Bellene was established in 2008 by Nicolas Potel in Beaune. Potel is the son of Gérard Potel, who directed Domaine de la Pousse d’Or in Volnay for many years, and Nicolas grew up immersed in the vineyards and cellars of the Côte d’Or. Maison Roche de Bellene is Potel’s négociant operation, distinct from Domaine de Bellene, which comprises vineyards owned and farmed by Potel. The Maison works with growers throughout Burgundy and places particular emphasis on sourcing from old-vine parcels, reflected in the Vieilles Vignes designation used across a number of its wines. The name Bellene derives from Belenos, an ancient Gallic deity historically associated with Beaune. Potel’s extensive relationships with growers throughout Burgundy allow the Maison to produce wines across a broad range of regional, village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru appellations.
- Vineyard: This is a regional Bourgogne Chardonnay produced from old-vine Chardonnay sourced from both the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. Rather than representing a single climat or village, the cuvée combines Chardonnay from multiple sites to produce a broader expression of Burgundy. The 2014 vintage was particularly successful for Chardonnay in Burgundy. After a variable first half of the growing season and significant hail damage in portions of the Côte de Beaune, conditions improved considerably during the latter part of the season. A dry, sunny September allowed Chardonnay to finish ripening under favorable conditions while retaining acidity. The resulting 2014 whites became particularly noted for their combination of ripe fruit, freshness and structure.
- Winemaking: The 2014 Bourgogne Chardonnay Vieilles Vignes was matured in barrel, giving the wine additional texture and development while retaining the freshness characteristic of the vintage. The Vieilles Vignes program is built around mature vineyard sources, with the quality and concentration of the raw material forming the basis of the cuvée rather than relying on appellation prestige. Guide Hachette records a production of approximately 78,480 bottles for this exact 2014 bottling, indicating that it was one of the Maison’s more substantial regional cuvées. Barrel élevage gives Chardonnay at this level additional breadth and allows the fruit, acidity and oak-derived texture to integrate before bottling.
- Technical Details: Bourgogne AOC; 2014 vintage; white Burgundy; 100% Chardonnay; Vieilles Vignes cuvée; produced by Maison Roche de Bellene in Beaune; old-vine fruit sourced from the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise; matured in barrel; 13% ABV; approximately 78,480 bottles produced; 750ml bottle. The wine belongs to Nicolas Potel’s Maison Roche de Bellene négociant range and carries the regional Bourgogne appellation.
- Food Pairing: Roasted cod, Dover sole, halibut, seared scallops, roast chicken, chicken with a light cream sauce, crab cakes, mushroom risotto, Comté and Gruyère. Guide Hachette specifically recommends roasted cod with the 2014 and suggests serving the wine at approximately 10–12°C / 50–54°F. The combination of Chardonnay acidity and barrel-derived texture makes white fish, shellfish and poultry natural matches, while the wine’s bottle age makes mushroom preparations and moderately aged cheeses particularly appropriate. A mature bottle can also benefit from being served slightly warmer than a young Chardonnay, allowing its developed aromatics and texture to become more apparent in the glass.
