Notes:
- Producer: Champagne Pierre Deville is a family estate based in Verzy, one of the historic Grand Cru villages of the Montagne de Reims. Today the domaine is led by Alban Corbeaux, the fourth generation of the family, who took over in 2017. The estate traces its Champagne production to Alban’s great-grandfather, Pierre Deville, who began bottling under his own name in 1963. Under Alban, the focus remains firmly on Verzy and expressing the village through careful farming and relatively restrained cellar work. Primitif is the domaine’s multi-vintage introduction to this approach, produced entirely from Grand Cru fruit grown in Verzy.
- Vineyard: Primitif is sourced 100% from Verzy Grand Cru in the Montagne de Reims. The blend is 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, reflecting the strong importance of Pinot Noir in Verzy. The supplier describes the vineyards as limestone-on-chalk soils, characteristic of the chalk-dominated terroir of the Montagne de Reims. This release is a multi-vintage blend based on the 2022 harvest, which accounts for half of the finished wine. The remaining half comes from the two preceding vintages: 30% 2021 and 20% 2020.
- Winemaking: The wine undergoes natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts, followed by complete malolactic fermentation. Vinification is divided between two vessels: approximately two-thirds in temperature-controlled stainless steel and one-third in oak barrel. The combination allows the majority of the blend to be raised in a neutral, temperature-controlled environment while incorporating a smaller barrel component. Following secondary fermentation and aging in bottle, the Champagne was finished with a low 2.5 g/L dosage, placing it firmly within the Extra Brut category.
- Technical Details: 80% Pinot Noir / 20% Chardonnay. 100% Verzy Grand Cru, Montagne de Reims. Base 2022, assembled from 50% 2022 / 30% 2021 / 20% 2020. Two-thirds vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel and one-third in oak barrel. Indigenous yeast fermentation with complete malolactic fermentation. Dosage: 2.5 g/L. Disgorged February 5, 2025. Production: 3,600 bottles. Extra Brut.
- Food Pairing: The Pinot Noir-dominant blend and low dosage make Primitif well suited to both aperitif service and the table. Pair it with oysters, shellfish, grilled prawns, sushi or crudo, as well as richer dishes such as roast chicken or pork. It would also work particularly well with aged Comté or other firm Alpine cheeses.
