Notes:
- Franck Pascal is one of Champagne's true biodynamic pioneers. Based in the Marne Valley village of Baslieux-sous-Châtillon, Pascal began converting his vineyards to biodynamic farming in the early 2000s, long before it became fashionable in Champagne. Today, the estate is regarded as one of the leading grower-producers focused on soil health, low-intervention viticulture, and terroir transparency.
- The name "Fluence" comes from the French word fluer, meaning "to change slowly over time." The cuvée was created to illustrate the gradual transformation of the estate's vineyards following the adoption of biodynamic farming. Pascal considers the wine evidence of the renewed vitality and balance achieved in the vineyard through healthier soils and more resilient vines.
- Unlike many Champagnes that lean heavily on Chardonnay, Fluence is traditionally dominated by Pinot Meunier, the signature grape of the Marne Valley. Depending on the release, the blend generally consists of a majority of Meunier with supporting portions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The result is a Champagne that combines richness and texture with freshness and mineral tension.
- The vineyards are planted on classic Champagne soils of chalk, clay marl, and limestone, which contribute both freshness and structure. The chalky subsoils help retain moisture during dry periods while providing the mineral backbone that defines the best grower Champagnes.
- Winemaking is notably minimalist. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, sulfur use is kept extremely low, and the wine undergoes extended aging on its lees—often around four years before disgorgement. Fluence is bottled as a Brut Nature, meaning it receives zero dosage, allowing the vineyard and fruit character to remain fully exposed. No fining or filtration is employed.
- What separates Fluence from many Brut Nature Champagnes is its balance. While zero-dosage wines can sometimes feel austere, the dominance of Pinot Meunier provides a natural generosity and breadth that softens the wine's razor-sharp structure. The result is a Champagne that feels both energetic and complete.
