Notes:
Producer: Domaine Bachey-Legros is a family estate based in Santenay, with six generations of history in Burgundy. Today Samuel and Lénaïc Legros represent the sixth generation, farming approximately 18 hectares across Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet and Maranges. Old vines are central to the identity of the domaine: much of its vineyard material was planted between 1935 and 1955, and the family has worked to preserve this inheritance rather than systematically replanting. The domaine emphasizes careful farming, low yields and allowing its mature vines to express the differences between its individual sites. This combination of old-vine material and holdings across the southern Côte de Beaune has become one of the signatures of Bachey-Legros.
Vineyard: Maranges sits at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, immediately south of Santenay. This village-level Vieilles Vignes is 100% Pinot Noir and draws on the domaine’s mature vines in the appellation. Maranges is characterized by slopes with predominantly clay-limestone soils, giving Pinot Noir a combination of ripe fruit, freshness and firm underlying structure. Bachey-Legros’ emphasis on old vines is particularly important here: older, deeply rooted vines naturally produce smaller quantities of concentrated fruit and help give the wine greater depth while retaining the direct, energetic character associated with Maranges. The 2023 shows the generous side of the appellation, with ripe red and dark berry fruit, spice and an earthy undertone balanced by freshness and fine tannic structure.
Winemaking: The grapes are harvested by hand, allowing selection to begin in the vineyard. In the cellar, Bachey-Legros favors a measured approach to extraction, preserving fruit and freshness rather than pushing for excessive concentration. Fermentations proceed naturally, and the domaine uses oak judiciously during élevage. For its village-level red wines, new oak generally accounts for approximately 15–20% of the barrels, enough to contribute texture and structure without overwhelming the Pinot Noir. The resulting style combines the concentration provided by the domaine’s old vines with a supple, fruit-driven character. In 2023, the wine shows ripe cherry and berry fruit alongside spice and subtle savory notes, with a fleshy mid-palate, fresh acidity and enough structure to develop further in bottle.
Technical Details: 13% ABV; 750ml.
Food Pairing: The combination of ripe Pinot Noir fruit, freshness and moderate tannin makes this an easy wine to bring to the table. Roast chicken, grilled pork chops, duck and herb-crusted lamb all work particularly well, while the wine has enough structure for braised beef and other slow-cooked meats. Mushroom dishes are another natural match, particularly mushrooms sautéed with herbs or served alongside roast poultry. For a more traditional Burgundy pairing, try jambon persillé or œufs en meurette. Moderately aged cheeses also work well, particularly those with enough savory character to complement the wine without overwhelming its fruit. Serve around 15–16°C, with a short period of aeration when drinking young.
