Producer: Domaine Bachey-Legros is a family estate based in Santenay, today run by brothers Samuel and Lénaïc Legros, the sixth generation of the family. The domaine returned fully to family control over a period beginning in the 1990s: Lénaïc joined in 1999, Samuel in 2005, and the final vineyards that had previously been rented or sharecropped were brought back under direct management in 2017. Today the estate farms approximately 19 hectares, principally in Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet and Maranges. Old vines are central to the domaine’s identity, with many parcels planted between the 1930s and 1950s. The brothers work with naturally low yields from these mature vineyards and vinify individual parcels separately, allowing their unusually extensive collection of old-vine sites to remain distinct in the finished wines.
Vineyard: Les Petits Clos is a roughly two-hectare parcel within the large Morgeot Premier Cru, situated in the upper-middle portion of Morgeot, directly below Les Grands Ruchottes and La Romanée. It is the domaine’s flagship white-wine parcel and is particularly notable for the age and provenance of its vines: they were planted in 1950 by Domaine Ramonet, making them more than 70 years old today. The vineyard is planted entirely to Chardonnay on deep clay-limestone soils. Morgeot is generally one of the more substantial and powerful sectors of Chassagne-Montrachet, and the deeper soils of Les Petits Clos give the wine considerable breadth and concentration, while its position within the slope provides the limestone influence and mineral structure necessary to balance that natural richness.
Winemaking: The 100% Chardonnay fruit is harvested by hand and gently pressed in a pneumatic press. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at low temperature in barrel, and the brothers pay particular attention to the quality of the lees during élevage. Bâtonnage is determined by tasting rather than performed according to a fixed schedule, allowing the vintage and individual lot to dictate how much lees stirring is appropriate. For the 2023, the wine was raised for approximately 14 months in barrel on its lees without racking, followed by two months in tank, with 30% new French oak. This extended lees aging suits the concentration provided by the old vines while the relatively moderate proportion of new oak keeps the emphasis on the vineyard.

The 2023 was matured for approximately 14 months in barrel and two months in tank, with 30% new oak. Alcohol is 14.5%. The combination of a sizeable two-hectare holding and vines planted in 1950 makes Les Petits Clos an especially important part of the Bachey-Legros holdings and one of the domaine’s defining wines.
Food Pairing: The depth and structure of this old-vine Morgeot make it particularly well suited to lobster, langoustines, scallops, turbot, monkfish or other richly textured fish, especially with butter or cream-based sauces. Roast chicken with morels, veal, or poultry with a light cream sauce would also work extremely well. With additional bottle age, the wine has enough concentration for truffle-based dishes and mature Comté. A serving temperature around 11–13°C will preserve its freshness while allowing the texture and complexity of the old-vine Chardonnay to emerge.
