Once again the expressive nose is super-fresh and appealing with its overtly floral-suffused nose of red pinot fruit, wet stone and rose petal. The medium weight flavors aren't quite as concentrated, but they are notably finer on the youthfully austere finale that could use better depth. Burghound 88-90

Producer: Domaine Sylvain Pataille was founded in 1999 and has grown to approximately 15 hectares, making it one of the most important estates in Marsannay. Pataille is trained as an oenologist and consults for numerous domaines throughout Burgundy. The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically, with all vineyard work performed manually and yields kept deliberately low.
Vineyard: La Montagne is a lieu-dit located on the upper slopes of Marsannay at elevations approaching 300 meters. The vineyard is planted on shallow limestone and marl soils with significant active limestone content. Its higher elevation and cooler exposure make it one of the latest-ripening sites in the appellation, contributing to naturally high acidity and pronounced mineral character.
Winemaking: The 2022 is produced from 100% Pinot Noir. Grapes are harvested by hand, sorted in the vineyard and cellar, and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Pataille typically employs a high percentage of whole clusters depending on stem ripeness. The wine is aged approximately 18 months in French oak barrels with a limited proportion of new oak, and bottled with minimal fining and filtration.
Food Pairing: Roast duck, pigeon, quail, grilled pork loin, mushroom dishes, veal chops, beef tartare, and aged Burgundian cheeses. The wine's bright acidity and structural backbone make it particularly well suited to game birds and earthy preparations.
