Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot is one of Chassagne-Montrachet's benchmark family estates, with roots in the village stretching back generations. While the estate is best known for its white wines, its red Chassagne-Montrachets are among the appellation's most compelling and often overlooked expressions of Pinot Noir.
Morgeot is one of the largest and most important Premier Cru vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet. Historically associated with an ancient abbey, the vineyard has been cultivated since at least the 15th century. Unlike many of Burgundy's famous white-wine sites, Morgeot is particularly well suited for Pinot Noir, producing some of the most structured and age-worthy red wines in the Côte de Beaune.
Jean-Marc Pillot's Morgeot Rouge is sourced from the climat Les Fairendes, where the domaine farms approximately two-thirds of a hectare of Pinot Noir planted in 1967. These mature vines naturally produce lower yields, resulting in greater concentration, complexity, and depth while preserving the elegance that defines Chassagne-Montrachet.
The vineyard benefits from classic Côte de Beaune clay-limestone soils. Clay contributes texture, body, and richness, while the limestone component provides freshness, minerality, and aromatic lift. This combination allows Morgeot to produce wines with both power and refinement, often displaying more structure than neighboring red Burgundy appellations.
Aromatically, the wine offers layers of black cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, violet, forest floor, and subtle spice. On the palate, dense fruit is balanced by silky tannins and a mineral backbone that gives the wine both power and elegance. Critics frequently describe Morgeot as the domaine's most robust red wine, yet one that retains remarkable finesse and harmony.
