Notes:
- Producer: Vignon Père & Fils is a small, family-run grower Champagne estate based in the Grand Cru village of Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims. Today, Stéphane Vignon continues the work of previous generations, farming approximately 6 hectares of estate vineyards divided between Verzenay and neighboring Verzy, two villages renowned for producing some of Champagne's finest Pinot Noir. Vineyard work is carried out sustainably with a strong emphasis on low yields, natural vineyard balance, and harvesting fruit at full maturity. In the cellar, fermentations rely on indigenous yeasts from the estate, and every cuvée is crafted in an Extra Brut style to allow the character of the vineyards to remain the focal point. Production remains limited, with each release reflecting Stéphane's philosophy of purity, freshness, and transparent terroir expression rather than house style.
- Vineyard: Réserve des Marquises is sourced entirely from Grand Cru vineyards in Verzenay and Verzy, where north-facing slopes have become increasingly prized for their ability to preserve freshness in warmer vintages. The 2018 is a blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay, combining the depth and red-fruited character of Pinot Noir with the precision and lift of Chardonnay. The chalk-rich soils of the Montagne de Reims contribute the wine's vibrant mineral backbone, while the warm, dry 2018 growing season delivered beautifully ripe fruit without sacrificing balance. Stéphane Vignon believes these cooler Grand Cru sites are particularly well suited to today's climate, producing wines of both generosity and remarkable freshness.
- Winemaking: The wine is fermented using the estate's native yeasts before extended aging on its lees, allowing texture and complexity to develop naturally. Following nearly six years of maturation, the 2018 was disgorged in August 2024 and finished as an Extra Brut with 3.5 g/L dosage. The restrained dosage allows the fruit and mineral character of Verzenay and Verzy to take center stage, revealing layers of red berries, peach, apricot, citrus, and chalk without masking the wine's natural precision. The result is a Champagne that is simultaneously generous, vibrant, and remarkably gastronomic.
- Technical Details: Champagne Grand Cru AOC; Vintage 2018; 65% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay; Grand Cru vineyards in Verzenay and Verzy, Montagne de Reims; indigenous yeast fermentation; extended lees aging; Extra Brut (3.5 g/L dosage); disgorged August 2024; 12.5% alcohol.
- Food Pairing: Roast chicken, duck breast, veal, lobster, grilled tuna, mushroom dishes, aged Comté, and truffle-infused cuisine all pair beautifully with Réserve des Marquises. The wine offers expressive aromas of blackberry, blueberry, peach, apricot, citrus peel, and fresh brioche, carried by a palate that balances Pinot Noir richness with Chardonnay-driven freshness. Fine mousse, chalky minerality, and a long, vibrant finish make it equally compelling as an aperitif or throughout an entire meal, while the structure of the 2018 vintage promises excellent aging potential.
