Notes:
- Producer: Vignon Père & Fils is a family-owned grower Champagne estate based in Verzenay Grand Cru on the Montagne de Reims. The domaine is managed by Stéphane Vignon, representing the fourth generation of the family. The estate farms approximately 7 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards located primarily in Verzenay and Verzy, with an emphasis on old-vine Pinot Noir. Vineyard work is carried out parcel by parcel, using natural cover crops, mechanical cultivation, and indigenous yeast fermentations. The house vinifies all of its Champagnes with native yeasts and ages the wines in oak, with each cuvée produced exclusively from Grand Cru fruit.
- Vineyard: Réserve des Marquises 2017 is produced from 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay sourced exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards in Verzenay and Verzy. The vineyards are planted on the chalk-rich soils of the Montagne de Reims, where Pinot Noir has historically been the dominant variety. The 2017 growing season was marked by spring frost and uneven weather throughout Champagne, reducing yields in many vineyards. Fruit for this cuvée was harvested exclusively from the 2017 vintage, with the blend reflecting the estate's traditional emphasis on Pinot Noir supported by Chardonnay for freshness and structure.
- Winemaking: Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, followed by élevage in French oak barrels. The wine remains on its lees during barrel aging before bottling for secondary fermentation. Following extended bottle aging, the wine was finished with an Extra Brut dosage of approximately 3.5 g/L, consistent with Stéphane Vignon's philosophy of limiting dosage to preserve vineyard expression. The producer releases the wine only after several years of cellar aging to allow the wine to integrate before disgorgement.
- Technical Details: Champagne AOC; Vintage 2017; 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay; Grand Cru fruit from Verzenay and Verzy; indigenous yeast fermentation; barrel vinification and aging; extended lees aging prior to disgorgement; Extra Brut (approximately 3.5 g/L dosage); approximately 12% alcohol.
- Food Pairing: The combination of Pinot Noir structure, Grand Cru fruit, barrel élevage, and restrained dosage makes this wine well suited to roast chicken, veal, duck breast, grilled pork, mushroom dishes, Comté, and aged Gruyère. The producer also recommends pairing the wine with veal, a match that complements both the wine's richness and its mineral finish.
