Notes:

(these vines are almost 60 years old):Healthy bright ruby-red; the darkest of these '14s. Expressive, deep nose offers scents of boysenberry, violet, wild spices and meat. Very concentrated and dense but weightless, conveying an attractive restrained sweetness and a slightly honeyed character to the flavors of dark berries, minerals and meat. Precise but not at all hard, with big but pliant tannins arriving late. Some Pinot Beurrot in this parcel gives the wine an added measure of gras, notes Frédéric Esmonin. This is also noticeably restrained with its cool nose of truffle, spice, plum and earth, all of which is trimmed in a deft touch of wood. There is both good volume and intensity to the even more mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension before terminating in a dusty and long if not quite as well-balanced finale due to a touch of dryness that I ascribe to the recent bottling. As such my score offers the benefit of the doubt. Burghound 91

There are five barrels of the 2012 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru when there are usually ten from Esmonin’s 0.52-hectare parcel of vines and like the Mazis-Chambertin it sees 100% new oak. It has a potent nose that immediately and somewhat curiously reminds me of Indian spices - “Balti” to be exact (not a trait I have come across often.) The palate is medium-bodied with dense red and black fruit. It is very harmonious with fine structure, although the Mazis-Chambertin expresses more complexity and nuance. Still, this is a fine grand cru. Wine Advocate 91
