(Volnay Taillepieds- Domaine Marquis dAngerville) Like the Fremiets, the 2010 Taillepieds had finished up its malo a month prior to my visit and had not yet been racked. There is still a bit of gas in this wine from the malo, but the wine is quite obviously a lovely example of the vintage, as it offers up a deep and sappy nose of cherries, red plums, pomegranate, a fine base of soil, hints of cocoa and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish pure and very suave on the attack, with a good core of sappy fruit, lovely transparency, fine-grained tannins and very good length and grip on the finish. (Domaine Marquis dAngerville Volnay "Taillepieds" 1er 1er Cru Red) An overtly spicy nose also features notes of ripe plum, violets and an intense stoniness. There is beautiful energy to the strikingly intense and racy flavors where the underlying structural elements are clearly ripe and while firm, they seem less prominent than they are in reality as there is an abundance of buffering dry extract. While their hallmark austerity is indisputably present, the overall impression is that this is less reserved than it typically is, which should allow it to be approachable after only 6 to 8 years, though it will require all of 12 to 15 years to reach is full peak.
