As is usually the case, this is not nearly as seductive as the Clos desChnes but it's more complex and with better overall depth of materialbeginning with the reserved, densely fruited and layered red pinot fruitaromas nuanced by hints of spice and earth that lead to mineral infused,sweet and delicious medium full flavors that are refined yet quite serious,all wrapped in a linear and penetrating finish that is borderline strict atpresent. This will clearly require a few more years in the cellar to roundout but the potential is indisputable. An elegant Champans for thepatient. Burghound 93

Producer note: Dominique Lafon describes 2005 as "an easy vintage that produced verypure reds. It was a super clean crop that required basically no sorting atall. I usually realize between 31 to 32 hl/ha but in 2005 I had 35 and I'mextremely happy to have had such high quality fruit and a bit more of it asa bonus. What's even better is that even with the slightly higher yieldssugars were still in the 13% plus range with wonderfully ripe phenolics. Even the Monthelie was over 13% and that rarely ever happens. Like I didin 2004, I went for a long cuvaison of around 3 weeks but with verygentle extraction. And also like in 2004, the malos were extremely longand slow but that never bothers me as long as the reduction doesn't becometoo strong. What I find so interesting about 2005 is that it has thiswonderfully ripe quality to it but the acidity is almost like it was in1996. The key difference though is that there is more flesh and depth tothe '05s yet they kept the fantastic purity of the '96s, all of whichshould enable to them age for years." Readers should note that therewas no Clos des Chnes in 2004 as all of it was declassified into thestraight Volnay
