($175) Bright red-ruby. Pure, discreet aromas of black fruits and licorice. Dense, sweet and highly concentrated, with a sappy core of acidity giving verve to the dark berry and floral flavors. A wine with terrific nervosite, without being at all hard. Wonderfully long and aromatic, with firm tannins in perfect balance with the wine's fruit. 93(+?) points
Producer note: Virgile Lignier professed himself to be extremely pleased with his 2001s though he candidly admitted that he was quite concerned about them at first because the malic acid was so high. Yields were around 40 hl/ha and sugars came in between 11.5 to 12.5% with pHs of 3.1 to 3.2, which is quite low. "We had ripe tannins though and once the malos were complete, the wines came out of their shells". Lignier expressed a clear preference for 2001 over his 2000s. The wines had not been racked at the time of my visit and will be bottled in February, probably without fining or filtration. Tasting note: Much more reserved and understated with darker, earthier fruit and aromas of underbrush and spice that introduce powerful, robustly structured, medium full flavors that pack plenty of flavor authority and punch. Sappy, mouth coating and long with a slightly austere finish. Classy juice that is clearly built to age and should amply reward a decade of patience. 91 points

Lively black fruits and fresh herbs are found in the nose of the medium to dark ruby-colored 2001 Clos de la Roche. Tightly-wound and exhibiting loads of tannin, it has outstanding depth of blackberry, cassis, and blueberry fruit. Medium-bodied and well-balanced, it appears to have the requisite fruit to sustain its firm character. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2010. 88-91 points
