Denis Bachelet flatly states that 2001 is "clearly better than 2000. It will repay extended aging and should keep about like the '99s". He presently plans to bottle in March without fining or filtration. As usual, the Corbeaux and the Charmes are reference standard and the Gevrey Vieilles Vignes is as good as ever but the sleeper in 2001 is the Cte de Nuits-Villages, a wine that delivers exceptional quality for its level.

Tasting note: Stunningly complex and exuberantly spicy red pinot fruit aromas cut with plenty of Gevrey earth and a lovely freshness precede silky, dense, discreetly muscular flavors that offer fantastic length. This too has that seductive quality of a velvety sappiness on the layered finish and completely coats the mouth. Knockout quality here. Burghound 91-94
