Turley Hayne Vineyard
This is a wine I truly never expected to offer. When the rep walked in with it, I honestly told him I was not interested in tasting it. He insisted. I’m glad he did, because this bottle completely changed my perspective on Turley Petite Syrah. It reminded me why it pays to keep an open mind.
It had been years since I last tasted one of these, let alone one with 15+ years of age, as I was completely caught off guard by how beautifully it has evolved. Yes, it is full bodied, but the structure has relaxed into something layered and expressive. Blackberry leads the way, followed by blueberry, lavender, violet, subtle spice, black pepper, and crushed herbs. Each time I went back to the glass, something new surfaced. It is powerful, but it is also nuanced and surprisingly graceful. The kind of wine that keeps you coming back for another sip.
I looked up at the rep and just shook my head. I wanted to hate this wine. Instead, I had to admit it is seriously good. This is not an everyday Petite Syrah. It is a standout example of what the grape can become with time. If you love bold reds for barbecue or a well charred steak, this absolutely delivers. I wish I had more to sell - In stock next week.
It was difficult to chose a favorite although the 2009 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge, Hayne Vineyard and Library Vineyard are the three greatest in terms of concentration, depth and potential complexity. As I have said so many times, Petite Sirah is by far the most underrated varietal in California, so it is reassuring to see how many producers continue to make remarkable wines with around 13-14% alcohol as well as 20-40+ years of aging potential.
