Poggio Valente 2022
Over the last three vintages, Poggio Valente has quietly become our best-selling Italian red—and once you taste it, you’ll understand why. From a single vineyard near the village of Pereta on Tuscany’s Maremma coast, this 100% Sangiovese captures the balance of elegance and structure that defines the region’s modern icons.
Awarded 95+ points by Monica Larner (Wine Advocate), who called it “especially luminous and lifted,” this vintage delivers dark cherry fruit, wild herbs, and spice with finely tuned tannins and a long, mineral finish. It’s graceful but confident—true to winemaker Elisabetta Geppetti’s vision of “verticality, elegance, and freshness.”
A key turning point came in 2012, when the estate eliminated Merlot from the blend to focus entirely on Sangiovese. Today, Poggio Valente is vinified in stainless steel with a long, gentle maceration, then aged in large French oak tonneaux—about 50% new—designed to elevate purity over power.
The result? A wine that feels handcrafted down to the pixel (in fact, optical grape sorting ensures only perfect berries make it into the fermenters). In a world where top Tuscan reds often start at triple digits, Poggio Valente remains a rare find—an artisanal wine of pedigree, polish, and value.
The 2022 vintage confirms it: this isn’t just a standout from Le Pupille’s “mosaic” estate, it’s a benchmark Sangiovese you’ll want to have on hand.
This comes with my highest recommendation.

“Here is another knock-out bottle in this group of new releases from Fattoria le Pupille. The 2022 Poggio Valente is punchy and bright with terrific clarity of fruit. Winemaking has shifted over the years to prioritize larger oak botte. This change has allowed for more varietal expression with blue flower, heritage rose, tart cherry, rye bread and crushed stone. The wine's flavor signature is wholly Mediterranean with hints of rosemary and lavender. The effect is especially luminous and lifted in 2022. This is an elegant wine with a unique voice.”
