Montevertine
I wanted to share a bit of the story behind what makes Montevertine one of the great Estates in Tuscany. Founded in the late 1960’s by Sergio Manetti, Montevertine was born from the idea of respect for the land and a desire to make wines that reflect their place rather than a style. From the beginning, the estate embraced organic farming and minimal intervention, letting the vineyards and the vintage speak for themselves. Over the decades, Montevertine has maintained this philosophy, balancing tradition with careful evolution to produce wines of clarity, depth and authenticity.
At the heart of the estate’s approach is a commitment to the expression of Sangiovese. The vineyards are planted on rocky, calcareous soils just south of Radda in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone. The fruit for this bottling comes primarily from a 2.5 hectare parcel of vines planted in 1982 on a south – southeast facing slope, where they are allowed to fully mature in the bright Tuscan sun.

Montevertine favors native yeasts, gentle extraction and a slow 24 month elevage in large slovenian oak barrels, all choices that let nuance and balance develop over time. This philosophy creates wines that are expressive but never forced, where structure and finesse go hand in hand, and each vintage tells its own story.
The 2022 Rosso di Toscana is a great example of this. Made from 90% Sangiovese with the remaining 10% coming from Canaiolo and Colorino. I find notes of dark cherry, tart cranberry and a hint of savory herbs, carried by lively acidity and fine-grained tannins that make it both approachable now and rewarding with a bit of time in the glass. This is a no joke wine!
We have had a great run in Italy the last couple of years. The 2022 is right up there as one of the finest wines the Estate has ever produced. Very highly recommended.
Occupying the second ring in a tight portfolio of three wines is the 2022 Montevertine. This is 90% Sangiovese with smaller parts Canaiolo and Colorino that starts off in cement and matures in botte grande. Winemaking is straightforward, traditional and hands-off. However, the intensity is taken up quite a notch compared to the Pian del Ciampolo. This wine shows extra ripeness and more of those Tuscan, sunshine-driven flavors of dark fruit and plum. It also has more volume and layering that is typical of this succulent vintage. It's really lovely. Montevertine reveals complexity and great freshness too, which keeps it in check. This is a release of 30,000 bottles.

The 2022 Montevertine is a total stunner. Readers will find a wine of uncommon depth and resonance, all in the classic Montevertine style with the purity of fruit of today's wines. Dark red cherry, red plum, blood orange, pomegranate, spice, menthol and rose petal stain the palate. All the elements are so well balanced. Silky tannins are completely incorporated in the wine's fabric. This is super-impressive. Montevertine is increasingly the wine for the shrewd consumer to buy here.
