Jomain Bourgogne 2024
The Bourgogne Côte d'Or appellation was created to distinguish regional wines sourced exclusively from the Côte d'Or. In Jomain's case, the fruit comes from vineyards surrounding Puligny-Montrachet, giving the wine a level of precision and minerality that's difficult to find at this price. It isn't trying to imitate Puligny-Montrachet, it simply benefits from the same limestone-rich soils and the same meticulous attention in both the vineyard and cellar.
In a vintage like 2024, the classic citrus-leaning, green-apple minerality and freshness are on full display. These are the flavors I'm always looking for, and 20 years ago this is exactly what you came to expect from white Burgundy. Today we see a vintage like this maybe every five years or so, and I fear it's becoming rarer all the time.
I've written numerous times over the past several months, after tasting the 2024s for myself, that I've fallen completely head over heels for this vintage. This is exactly how I want my white Burgundy - fresh, crisp, almost austere. Yields were painfully small, and thank goodness they were, because with a normal-size crop the fruit would never have been able to ripen.
I could go on and on describing all the nuances that make this a wine I so enjoy drinking. The bottom line is this is a fantastic Bourgogne, and at $32 you could easily spend twice that amount and not find anything superior. When I taste wines like this, I try to buy as much as the importer will sell me. He reluctantly parted with 25 cases, which I'm happy to say arrived last week. If you drink white Burgundy at home with any regularity, this is one that's going to put a smile on your face. As tempting as it is to open today, my past experience leads me to believe that six months to a year from now, the wine will have added even more depth and complexity. Buy this one by the case! You will be glad you did.
