Domaine de Croix
I'm pleased to offer today one of my favorite wines from the Côte de Beaune, Domaine de Croix Beaune 1er Cru Pertuisots. It's very much an insider's wine, and if you have ever tasted with David Croix, most likely he has pulled it as a blind at the end of the visit.
I have a history with this Domaine that dates back to the very beginning, 2005 was the first vintage. My long-time friend and client, Roger Forbes, purchased the former Domaine Duchet and put David in charge of this new project. The Domaine has grown steadily over the years, and in fact they have just added a Meursault Santenots (Rouge), which should be part of the 2025 lineup.
I've tasted countless times with David, not only at the Domaine but at my home in Ojai as well. I make it a point to drop in and see him whenever I'm in Beaune; however, he was tending to his project in the Jura on my visit last month, and unfortunately I was not able to taste the 2024s.
I did receive an offer the other day from one of my suppliers for his outstanding 2022 Beanune 1er Cru Pertuisots. I quietly ordered everything that was offered. The only other producer I know of that makes wine from this vineyard is Potel, and I can’t say I have ever tasted it. If you have and experience with this wine, you know about its magic. It's a wine I'd describe as medium-plus in terms of density, with a nose that fills the room with beautiful aromatics of red fruits and spice. What makes this wine so appealing is the texture and mouthfeel — there are no hard, drying edges here, just a beautiful, soft, elegant finish. I've had the 2006, 2007, and 2008 all within the last two months, and as beautiful as the wine is in its youth, there is no question it can age and develop additional complexity. This is a first-rate wine in every way, and if you don't believe me, take a look at how Neil Martin has gushed over it. You can spend $100 on a lot of wines — you would be hard-pressed to find anything better! 4cs available ETA Summer 2026
The 2022 Beaune Pertuisots ler Cru, which contains 27% whole bunches, has such a pretty nose with crystalline red fruit that you want to run away and elope with. The palate is medium-bodied with quite succulent tannins that belie the structure of this Beaune. There's wonderful mineralité towards the finish. It's a beautiful wine, one of David Croix's favorite cuvées.
