Article: 2023 Robert Chevillon

Domaine Robert Chevillon

2023 Robert Chevillon

It's with great pleasure we offer the 2023 Robert Chevillon, a domaine at the forefront of the conversation about what vineyards should be elevated to Grand Cru: Premier Cru from Nuits St Georges and/or the dazzling line up of 1er cru from Domaine Robert Chevillon?

I’ve been buying, drinking and collecting Robert Chevillon since the mid 90’s and tasted every vintage since at least 1995. Year in and out the wines deliver. In the last 8-10 years, the youthful wines have taken on a bit more charm as the warmer weather has benefitted the terroirs. In the past, they may have had more rustic leanings, but in today's Burgundy world, these wines in particular continue to deliver unbeatable quality given their price points.

Can you be so vociferous in your opposition to Burgundy prices, if you are not taking advantage of these?

pre-arrival

An ultra-fresh nose speaks of ripe red and dark berries plus an abundance of earth character. There is better volume and density to the energetic medium weight flavors where the supporting tannins are unusually fine in the context of what is typical for a Nuits villages. Excellent and worth your interest.

- Burghound, 89-91 Outstanding Top Value!

A fine even purple, with immediate fresh raspberry fruit, crunchy but still really structured, much darker fruit behind. Rugged not rustic, with decent length. A solid, concentrated, Nuits-St-Georges. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Nov 2024.

- Jasper Morris, 89-92

A deft application of wood is present on the notably spicier nose of mostly various dark berries. The delicious medium-bodied flavors are not particularly dense but they are noticeably more refined and particularly so on the lightly stony, balanced and lingering finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose reemerged.

- Burghound, 90-92

Aromas of cherries, cassis and rose petal preface the 2023 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots, a medium-bodied, supple and floral rendition of this northern Nuits premier cru. It will offer a broad drinking window.

- William Kelley, 90-92

Mid purple, with a spicy nose a little bit of sandalwood. Just a little earthy at the back of the palate which dries a bit along with the wood. A fine concentration of dark red fruit Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.

- Jasper Morris, 88-92

Moderate wood sets off ripe aromas of poached plum, crushed anise and pretty violet hints. There is a bit more volume to the delicious and lightly stony flavors that also are not particularly dense but the length is seriously impressive as is the balance. Moreover, this very classy effort should drink well a bit earlier than usual.

- Burghound, 91-93 Outstanding!

Wafting from the glass with notes of cherries, smoky berries, licorice and rose petals, the 2023 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with its usual suave, seamless profile and lively fruit flavors.

- William Kelley, 92-94

A beautiful mid purple colour with a very enhanced class to the fruit on the nose. This is very complete again with the more rigid structure, little waves of fruit keep pouring across the palate, almost daintily given the power. Drink from 2032-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.

- Jasper Morris, 92-95

There is just enough wood to notice suffusing the overtly sauvage-inflected dark berry and earth-scented nose. The vibrant and well-detailed middle weight flavors that also possess only average concentration though there is again excellent balance and length as well as more complexity. This lovely effort is the class of the Chevillon range in 2023.

- Burghoud, 92-94 Sweet Spot Outstanding!

An even mid purple. The high-class nose suggests the power to come as well as the rock below. Everything is immaculately in place. Excellent tension, with the fruit staying more on the red side of the divide. Very pure, balanced and very long. Drink from 2033-2043. Tasted Nov 2024.

- Jasper Morris, 94-97 | 5 Stars

The 2023 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains is especially good this year. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berry preserves, cassis, spices, vine smoke and dark chocolate, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with rich tannins, ripe acids and a long, perfumed finish. The inherent charm of the vintage has tempered this site's tendency to imposing structure to deliver an unusually open young Vaucrains.

- William Kelley, 93-95

This is aromatically similar to the Les Cailles with just a bit more fruit from the red side of the spectrum. On the palate though there is slightly more size and weight to the medium weight flavors with even more evident minerality adding a sense of lift to the balanced, long and more austere finale. This is firmer and more compact than the Les Cailles so at least some patience is advised. Burghound 91-93

The 2023 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges is lovely, mingling notes of cherries and cassis with hints of rose petal and vine smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and enveloping palate that's seamless and lively, with good depth at the core and powdery structuring tannins.

- William Kelley, 93-94

A lovely mid purple. This has a more voluptuous layer of fruit to it. A liquid deep raspberry at the front of the palate, firmer tannins behind, fair concentration and length. A very seductive long aftertaste. Drink from 2033-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.

- Jasper Morris, 93-96
