2023 Jean Marie Fourrier
“I would note that the quality in 2023 is excellent and easily exceeds the average”
Today, I’ll keep it brief. Jean Marie Fourrier is one of the darlings of Gevrey Chambertin and the domaine does not fail to push the envelope where quality is concerned. Not a lot more needs to be said.
I only wish I had more to sell. Limited quantities available.
A completely different and more deeply pitched nose is comprised by notes of wild dark currant, poached plum and plenty of newly turned earth nuances. The medium-bodied flavors are not especially dense but they possess both good vibrancy and a beguiling texture while delivering good if not truly special persistence on the complex and balanced finale.Â
- Burghound, 88-91
Bright crimson, fresh red fruit with precision, and length, over and above the Bourgogne. Really smart harmonious wine with good length, the little red fruits staying in the mouth. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted Nov 2024.Â
- Jasper Morris, 90-93
This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction and in this case it's enough to dominate the fruit. On the palate though there is fine volume and more evident power if perhaps not quite the same refinement on the firmer, more austere and more compact finale. Like the Goulots, this is potentially outstanding.Â
- Burghound, 91-94Â Outstanding!
The vines were planted in 1928, on the flat in the quarry, but surrounded by walls of rock. A rich bright purple. Huge energy. Very stylish on the palate, glossy yet complete, darker fruit here with a little pepper at the finish. A really impressive fine long finish with great depth. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.Â

A restrained if exceptionally pretty nose speaks of spiced liqueur-like aromas of various dark berries including cassis, plum and an interesting hint of jasmine tea. There is a really lovely sense of vibrancy to the even more mineral-driven flavors that are blessed with a bit better mid-palate density before concluding in a firm, serious and beautifully persistent finale. This well-balanced and quite powerful effort should easily reward a decade plus of cellaring.Â
- Burghound, 93-95 Outstanding!
Francois describes the soil as going through five layers, starting very limestone at the top of the slope and finishing in silty soil at the bottom. Three quarters was planted in 1910 while the bottom section below the alley is from 1955. Rich glowing crimson purple. There is a firmness to the bouquet that makes one sit up. Tasted after the excellent Combe aux Moines one can easily see the suggestion of grand cru for Clos St-Jacques. There is a sublime weight of deep red fruit in the middle of the palate, then a brilliant long finale after the perfectly managed tannins. A fraction of spice for seasoning, around the silkiness of the fruit. I am still tasting the fruit many minutes later. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.Â

A discreet whiff of oak surrounds the notably spice-infused aromas of red and dark berries, sandalwood and exotic tea. The medium weight flavors possess a highly seductive and refined mouthfeel while delivering evident minerality on the highly persistent, complex and impeccably well-balanced finish. This is at once wonderfully elegant and powerful and a wine that should amply reward extended keeping. In sum, this is a very classy effort.Â
- Burghound 93-96
Five barrels in 2023, riches! Glowing purple. The nose is sensational. A happy explosion of floral peonies with ripe red berries. Ethereal while retaining its grounding in ultra rich concentrated red fruit, remarkably stylish with a spectacular intensity all the way through. Firm fruit at the finish. Solid and sensual at the same time. 13.99% alcohol says François with a grin. Even after the near perfect Clos St-Jacques this shows well. Drink from 2033-2045. Tasted Nov 2024.Â
