Notes:
The 2023 Chardonnay Ma Belle Fille has slowly opening scents of Meyer lemon, panna cotta, orange blossom, saline and well-matched, seamlessly integrated oak spice. The full-bodied palate is silky and energetic, its highly concentrated flavors foiled by taut acidity, and it has a long, layered finish. 2,082 cases were made. Wine Advocate 96
- Producer: Peter Michael Winery was founded by Sir Peter Michael in 1982 on a mountainous property in Knights Valley, Sonoma County. The estate’s Chardonnay vineyards occupy steep volcanic terrain on the western face of Mount St. Helena, where elevation, exposure, and marine influence create markedly different conditions from the valley floor. The winery produces four estate Chardonnays—La Carrière, Belle Côte, Mon Plaisir, and Ma Belle-Fille—each bottled separately to reflect its individual site. Ma Belle-Fille translates to “my daughter-in-law” and was named by Sir Peter in honor of Emily Michael, wife of his son Paul and mother of the family’s third generation. The estate combines California mountain viticulture with a Burgundian-influenced cellar program based on native-yeast fermentation, French oak, lees aging, and bâtonnage.
- Vineyard: Ma Belle-Fille is the highest-elevation and largest of Peter Michael’s four estate Chardonnay vineyards, planted in 1999 across approximately 18 acres (7 hectares) at 1,700–1,900 feet elevation. Rather than being uniform, the vineyard is divided into blocks with different slopes and aspects and is typically separated into 17 individual picking parcels. Upper mid-slope blocks have gradients of roughly 20–30%, while lower mid-slope blocks range from 10–25%; gentler lower blocks contribute another distinct component to the final blend. The underlying geology is white and gray rhyolitic volcanic ash-flow tuff. The site sits above the summer fog ceiling and faces southeast, receiving early morning sunlight while experiencing greater marine influence and cooler summer and autumn temperatures because of its elevation. This unusual combination of strong sunlight and cool mountain conditions means Ma Belle-Fille is typically the earliest-ripening Chardonnay vineyard on the estate. The vineyard contains a mixture of historic California Chardonnay selections and French Dijon clones.
- Winemaking: The 2023 Ma Belle-Fille is 100% Chardonnay, harvested by hand during Peter Michael’s unusually late 2023 harvest. The fruit was 100% naturally fermented with native yeasts and entirely barrel-fermented in French oak sourced from selected artisan coopers. After fermentation, the wine remained sur lies in barrel for 12 months, with weekly bâtonnage to keep the fine lees in suspension. It was subsequently bottled unfiltered on February 6, 2025 and released on September 1, 2025. This cellar regimen is an established part of the Ma Belle-Fille program and is designed to build texture through barrel fermentation and prolonged lees contact rather than through filtration or clarification before bottling. The 2023 growing season was unusually cool and long: substantial winter rainfall and cool conditions delayed budbreak by nearly a month, flowering occurred later under favorable conditions, and the season proceeded without major heat spikes. Chardonnay yields recovered to slightly above average after the exceptionally small 2022 crop, while the temperate conditions allowed the fruit to maintain acidity through the extended ripening period.
- Technical Details: Knights Valley AVA, Sonoma County; 2023 vintage; 100% Chardonnay; estate-grown fruit; Ma Belle-Fille Vineyard planted 1999; approximately 18 acres; 1,700–1,900 feet elevation; southeast exposure; highest Chardonnay vineyard on the Peter Michael estate; white and gray rhyolitic volcanic ash-flow tuff; vineyard generally divided into 17 picking parcels; historic California and Dijon Chardonnay selections; hand harvested; native-yeast fermentation; 100% barrel fermented in French oak; aged 12 months sur lies; weekly bâtonnage; bottled unfiltered February 6, 2025; 14.9% ABV; approximately 2,082 cases produced; released September 1, 2025.
- Food Pairing: Butter-poached lobster, Dungeness crab, seared scallops, king salmon, roasted halibut, grilled swordfish, roast chicken, chicken with morels, veal chops, pork loin, lobster risotto, corn risotto, butternut squash ravioli, Comté, Gruyère, and triple-cream cheeses. The combination of mountain-grown acidity, substantial Chardonnay fruit, barrel fermentation, and extended lees contact gives the wine enough structure for richer seafood, poultry, and cream- or butter-based preparations.
