Notes:
- Producer: Domaine Michel Turgy is a small grower Champagne estate in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the Grand Cru villages of the Côte des Blancs. The Turgy family has grown Chardonnay here since 1881, and today the domaine is led by Jean-Michel Turgy. The estate farms approximately 15 acres (six hectares) and works exclusively with Chardonnay, with its vineyards centered in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Turgy is a récoltant-manipulant, growing its own grapes and producing Champagne on site. Vineyard work follows lutte raisonnée principles, incorporating organic practices while limiting chemical treatments. Réserve Sélection is a special cuvée produced for importer North Berkeley Imports and incorporates 30% reserve wine, a larger reserve component than Turgy's regular non-vintage Blanc de Blancs.
- Vineyard: Réserve Sélection is 100% Chardonnay sourced from multiple small estate parcels in and around Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, all classified Grand Cru. The vines range from approximately 20 to 60 years old and are planted on the village's characteristic pure chalk soils derived from ancient fossilized marl and limestone. Le Mesnil sits in the heart of the Côte des Blancs and is particularly associated with structured, mineral-driven Chardonnay. Turgy's holdings across several parcels allow the cuvée to combine different exposures and vine ages while remaining entirely rooted in the same Grand Cru terroir.
- Winemaking: Grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed using an old wooden upright Champagne press. The juice is fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by full malolactic fermentation. The Réserve Sélection incorporates 30% reserve wine, adding mature material from previous harvests to the current base while maintaining the freshness of Chardonnay from Le Mesnil. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle according to the traditional Champagne method, and the wine spends approximately three years aging in bottle before release. Dosage is a low 3 g/L, placing the wine comfortably within the Brut category while keeping the focus on the Chardonnay and chalk-rich Grand Cru terroir. The domaine disgorges its Champagnes by hand.
- Technical Details: Champagne AOC; Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut; Réserve Sélection; non-vintage; 100% Chardonnay; Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Côte des Blancs, Champagne, France; multiple estate parcels rated 100% Grand Cru; vines approximately 20–60 years old; pure chalk soils with ancient fossilized marl and limestone; hand harvested; traditional upright press; indigenous-yeast fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel; full malolactic fermentation; 30% reserve wine; secondary fermentation in bottle; approximately 3 years bottle aging; hand disgorged; 3 g/L dosage; 750ml; natural cork.
- Food Pairing: Oysters, chilled shellfish, crab, lobster, scallops, sushi, sashimi, smoked salmon, sole meunière, roast chicken, and young Comté are excellent matches. The domaine's importer specifically recommends the Réserve Sélection as an aperitif or with sushi and delicate seafood. Its combination of Chardonnay acidity, low dosage, chalk-driven structure, and additional depth from the reserve wines makes it versatile enough to move from lighter raw seafood through richer fish and poultry dishes.
