The 2023 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is another pretty wine in this range. Floral notes and mid-weight structure are the signatures. Rose petal, mint, dried herbs, sage and orange peel are nicely lifted throughout. It will be interesting to see where this goes over time. - Antonio Galloni 93
Producer: La Ca’ Nova is a small, family-run estate in the village of Barbaresco, where the Rocca family has been growing grapes for generations and bottling its own wines since the 1970s. Today, Marco Rocca oversees the winemaking while Ivan Rocca works in the vineyards. The estate is particularly known for its traditional Barbarescos from Montefico and Montestefano, two important crus within the Barbaresco commune. La Ca’ Nova follows a traditional approach to Nebbiolo, relying on extended macerations and aging in large-format oak rather than small new barrels. The wines are known for combining the perfume and transparency of Nebbiolo with the structure and character of their individual vineyard sites.
Vineyard: Vigna Bric Mentina is La Ca’ Nova’s parcel within the Montefico MGA, on the eastern side of the Barbaresco commune near the border with Neive. The vineyard sits high on the Montefico hillside, with a predominantly southeast-facing exposure. Its soils are based on the calcareous marl and limestone typical of Barbaresco, with a sandy component that contributes to the site’s combination of perfume, freshness and structure. Montefico has long been associated with structured, energetic expressions of Nebbiolo, and Bric Mentina is La Ca’ Nova’s single-vineyard interpretation of the cru.
Winemaking: The Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is made entirely from Nebbiolo and vinified using traditional methods. Fermentation is followed by an extended period of skin contact, including the traditional steccatura method, in which wooden slats are used to keep the cap submerged during maceration. The wine is then matured in large-format oak casks rather than small barrels. This restrained élevage keeps oak influence in the background and allows the floral aromatics, tannic structure and character of Montefico to remain at the forefront.

Food Pairing: The combination of Nebbiolo’s acidity, aromatic character and firm tannins makes this a natural match for rich, savory dishes. Pair it with braised beef, roast lamb, veal, duck, osso buco or tajarin with a meat ragù. Porcini mushrooms, mushroom risotto and dishes with truffles work particularly well with Nebbiolo’s floral, herbal and earthy character. Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, Castelmagno and other firm, mature cheeses are also excellent choices.
