Notes:
- Producer: A. Bergère is a family-owned Champagne house whose roots date to 1848, when the Bergère family first established its vineyards. Today, the domaine is managed by André Bergère and his children, Adrien and Anaëlle, from its headquarters on the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay. The estate farms approximately 45 hectares across the Côte des Blancs, Vallée du Petit Morin, Sézannais, and Côte des Bar, with a philosophy centered on expressing the individuality of each terroir through low-intervention viticulture and careful parcel selection. The Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs represents the house's dedication to the chalk-rich villages of the Côte des Blancs, showcasing Chardonnay from some of Champagne's most celebrated crus.
- Vineyard: This cuvée is produced from 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay sourced exclusively from the Côte des Blancs villages of Avize, Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant, and Chouilly. These villages are renowned for their deep Campanian chalk soils, which promote excellent drainage while providing the vines with consistent water reserves and contributing the mineral precision for which Côte des Blancs Chardonnay is known. By blending fruit from multiple Grand Cru villages, A. Bergère combines the elegance of Avize, the structure of Oger, the tension of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the finesse of Cramant, and the generosity of Chouilly into a single expression of Grand Cru Chardonnay. The current release is based on the 2021 vintage.
- Winemaking: The Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut is vinified to preserve freshness and terroir expression while adding texture through partial barrel aging. A portion of the wine is fermented in 228-liter French oak barrels, while the remainder is vinified in stainless steel to retain purity and precision. The wine undergoes extended maturation on its lees before disgorgement and is finished with a restrained Extra Brut dosage of 3 g/L, allowing the natural minerality and citrus-driven profile of the Chardonnay to remain at the forefront. The producer describes the finished wine as displaying subtle white floral aromas with a palate marked by lemon freshness, firm structure, and the taut finish characteristic of the Côte des Blancs.
- Technical Details: Champagne AOC; Non-Vintage Extra Brut; Base Vintage 2021; 100% Chardonnay; fruit sourced exclusively from the Grand Cru villages of Avize, Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant, and Chouilly in the Côte des Blancs; partial fermentation in 228-liter French oak barrels with the balance vinified in stainless steel; 3 g/L dosage; approximately 42 months on the lees before disgorgement.
- Food Pairing: A. Bergère specifically recommends pairing the Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut with mushroom risotto or scallops, dishes that complement the wine's freshness, fine structure, and mineral character. The combination of Grand Cru Chardonnay, low dosage, and extended lees aging also makes it well suited to refined shellfish preparations and elegant seafood dishes where the wine's citrus-driven profile and chalky finish can enhance rather than overwhelm the flavors of the food.
