Notes:
The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers ler Cru has an expressive bouquet with pure red cherry, raspberry and strawberry fruit tones bounding from the glass with nascent energy. The oak is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. It has more depth than the Lavaux-a little broader in the mouth. This is very harmonious toward the finish with greater backbone. It's excellent. Vinous Media 94
- Producer: Domaine Henri Magnien is a family estate in Gevrey-Chambertin, with holdings concentrated heavily in the commune. The current generation is represented by Charles Magnien, who works alongside his father, Henri. The domaine’s range is unusually useful for understanding the geology of Gevrey because its holdings extend through village vineyards and a number of important Premier Crus, including Champeaux, Estournelles Saint-Jacques, Lavaux Saint-Jacques and Les Cazetiers, as well as Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru. The estate works with indigenous yeasts and generally favors relatively restrained extraction and élevage tailored to each site. For 2023, Charles Magnien was particularly careful during sorting and vinification because of the generous crop and warm harvest conditions, choosing to preserve balance rather than push extraction.
- Vineyard: Les Cazetiers is one of the major Premier Cru vineyards on the northern side of Gevrey-Chambertin, occupying the slope above the village alongside the Saint-Jacques group of climats. Henri Magnien’s holding is particularly interesting because it consists of seven separate parcels distributed across the vineyard, giving the domaine access to the principal geological variations within Cazetiers. Bowler Wine identifies four principal soil types represented in these parcels: sandy marl, crinoidal limestone, Prémeaux limestone, and marl containing limestone debris. Rather than reflecting one small corner of the climat, the finished wine therefore draws from several parts of Cazetiers and several distinct soil formations. This geological diversity is one of the defining features of Magnien’s bottling.
- Winemaking: The 2023 was completely destemmed. Charles Magnien explained that analyses showed relatively low tartaric acidity and that he did not feel stems would benefit the wines that year. Sorting was particularly strict: despite generally healthy fruit, the large crop led him to instruct the team to retain bunches with small berries. Fermentation temperatures were deliberately kept low, reaching a maximum of only about 25°C, with less pigeage and remontage than usual. Magnien also avoided increasing the proportion of new oak, having retained additional older barrels from previous vintages specifically to maintain his normal ratio. The standard Cazetiers élevage is approximately 12 months in barrel, with the domaine’s importer identifying 25% new oak for this cuvée. The wines were bottled in November.
- Technical Details: Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru AOC; Les Cazetiers climat; 2023 vintage; 100% Pinot Noir; seven domaine parcels encompassing four principal soil types; fully destemmed; indigenous-yeast fermentation; maximum fermentation temperature approximately 25°C; restrained pigeage and remontage; approximately 12 months in French oak barrels with 25% new oak; 13.5% ABV is listed for the wine in U.S. retail and for the 1.5L bottling by Vila Viniteca; 1.5-liter magnum format.
- Food Pairing: Roast duck, duck breast with cherries, côte de boeuf, beef tenderloin, roast lamb, venison, squab, guinea fowl, beef with wild mushrooms, truffle preparations, Époisses and aged Comté. Cazetiers generally has enough structure for beef, lamb and game, while the Pinot Noir fruit and acidity work particularly well with duck and game birds. The 2023’s combination of refined tannins, mineral structure and freshness makes poultry and mushroom-based dishes especially good choices if the wine is opened relatively young. A magnum should also develop more slowly than a 750ml bottle, making this format particularly well suited to longer cellaring.
