Notes:
Slightly more elegant aromas include those of red currant, cherry and softer earth influence. There is slightly better size, weight and mid-palate density to the medium weight flavors that possess a caressing mouthfeel while delivering solid depth and persistence on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. This is quite good for its level and worth a look. Burghound Outstanding Top Value!
Producer: Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur is a sixth-generation family estate whose history reflects the union of two long-established Burgundian winegrowing families: the Bitouzet family of Volnay and the Prieur family of Meursault. The estate traces its origins to the early twentieth century and is now managed by François Bitouzet-Prieur, who joined the domaine in 2005 and assumed full responsibility in 2012. Today the domaine farms approximately 13 hectares, with holdings centered in Volnay and Meursault alongside parcels in Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet, Bourgogne, and Aligoté. François has continued the viticultural philosophy established by his father, Vincent, who eliminated herbicides during the 1994–95 vintages in favor of mechanical cultivation, plowing, and organic compost. The estate began experimenting with organic farming in 2009, expanded those practices across the entire vineyard by 2013, and achieved organic certification beginning with the 2023 vintage. Vineyard work focuses on maintaining living soils through regular cultivation, encouraging deep root systems while preserving the individuality of each parcel.
Vineyard: The 2023 Bourgogne Rouge is produced from 100% Pinot Noir grown in the lieu-dit Les Petits Chaliots, located immediately south of Volnay at the base of the Côte de Beaune escarpment. The parcel covers approximately 0.18 hectares and is planted to vines averaging 50 years of age. The vineyard sits on clay-limestone soils, typical of the lower slopes where a greater proportion of clay overlies fractured limestone bedrock. These soils provide greater water retention than the thin limestone soils found higher on the slope while maintaining sufficient drainage to regulate vine vigor. The combination produces Pinot Noir with balanced ripeness while retaining the freshness characteristic of Burgundy's limestone-derived terroirs. All fruit is harvested entirely by hand to preserve berry integrity before arriving at the winery.
Winemaking: The wine is produced exclusively from hand-harvested Pinot Noir that is 100% destemmed prior to fermentation. Vinification takes place in concrete tanks over approximately two weeks, with fermentation carried out exclusively by indigenous yeasts rather than cultured strains. Following fermentation, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels for approximately 12 months of élevage before bottling. The technical sheet does not specify the percentage of new oak, reflecting the estate's practice of adapting barrel usage to each cuvée and vintage rather than applying a fixed regimen across the range. The finished wine is bottled with an expected drinking window of approximately three to ten years from the vintage.
Food Pairing: The structure and freshness of Bourgogne Rouge make it a versatile companion for classic Burgundian cuisine and simply prepared dishes. It pairs well with roast chicken, duck breast, grilled pork tenderloin, herb-roasted quail, mushroom risotto, lentils with smoked bacon, or pâté en croûte. Semi-soft and washed-rind cheeses such as Époisses, Reblochon, or Tomme de Bourgogne also complement the wine without overwhelming its balance.
