Notes:
- Producer: Karthäuserhof is one of Germany's oldest wine estates, with a history dating to 1335, when the Elector of Trier granted the property to Carthusian monks. Today, the estate remains one of the historic benchmarks of the Ruwer Valley and farms approximately 26 hectares, almost entirely planted to Riesling. Every wine produced by the estate originates from its historic monopole vineyard, Karthäuserhofberg, allowing an unparalleled expression of a single terroir. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) and follows sustainable, biodynamic-inspired farming with meticulous hand harvesting and low yields.
- Vineyard: The Karthäuserhofberg is one of Germany's great historic vineyards and is classified as a VDP Grosse Lage. This monopole vineyard lies in the Ruwer Valley just outside Trier, with steep south-facing slopes reaching gradients of nearly 50%. The vineyard is composed primarily of Devonian slate, which stores daytime heat while promoting excellent drainage and imparting the distinctive mineral character for which Ruwer Rieslings are renowned. The valley's cool microclimate produces wines of remarkable elegance, vibrant acidity, and exceptional longevity, making Karthäuserhofberg one of the most revered Riesling sites in Germany.
- Winemaking: Produced from 100% Riesling, the grapes are harvested entirely by hand from the estate's monopole vineyard. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts to preserve the site's natural expression. The Kabinett is vinified to retain its hallmark balance of fruit sweetness and vibrant acidity, finishing at just 9% alcohol. The estate follows a minimalist philosophy in the cellar, allowing the vineyard's slate-driven minerality and purity of fruit to remain the focal point. While immediately expressive, the wine is built to evolve gracefully for 20 years or more.
- Technical Details: 100% Riesling; Ruwer (Mosel); VDP Grosse Lage fruit from the monopole Karthäuserhofberg vineyard; 9% alcohol; approximately 30 g/L residual sugar; indigenous yeast fermentation; vegan; capable of aging for two decades or longer.
- Food Pairing: An outstanding match for Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, sushi, pork schnitzel, roast pork, smoked trout, shellfish, soft-ripened cheeses, and lightly spiced dishes. Its combination of vibrant acidity, slate-driven minerality, and balanced residual sweetness also makes it an excellent partner for fruit-based desserts or as an aperitif.
