Notes:
- Producer: Weingut Reinhold Haart is a family-owned estate in the village of Piesport with documented winemaking history dating back to 1337. The winery is currently managed by Johannes and Marcus Haart, representing the latest generation of the family. The estate farms vineyards almost exclusively in and around Piesport, focusing on Riesling from steep slate slopes overlooking the Mosel River. Reinhold Haart is a member of Fair'n Green, Germany's sustainability initiative for wine estates, and follows environmentally conscious farming practices. Fruit is harvested entirely by hand, with production centered on traditional Mosel Prädikat wines that emphasize moderate alcohol, vibrant acidity, and site expression.
- Vineyard: This wine is classified as an Ortswein (village wine) and is sourced from vineyards surrounding Piesport, one of the Mosel's most historic wine villages. The vineyards are planted on Devonian grey slate soils along steep south- and southeast-facing slopes overlooking a broad bend in the Mosel River. The slate retains daytime heat while promoting excellent drainage, helping Riesling achieve full ripeness while preserving acidity. The forests above the vineyards help regulate moisture, even in warmer vintages. Piesport has been associated with Riesling cultivation for centuries and is home to some of Germany's oldest documented vineyard sites.
- Winemaking: Produced from 100% Riesling, the grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed immediately after arriving at the winery. After approximately 24 hours of settling, fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures. Fermentation proceeds slowly and is stopped naturally to retain the wine's characteristic balance of residual sugar and acidity. The wine remains on its fine lees for approximately six months before bottling in late spring. The finished wine carries 8.5% alcohol, reflecting the traditional Mosel Spätlese style.
- Technical Details: 100% Riesling; Spätlese; Mosel; Ortswein (Village Wine); 8.5% alcohol; approximately 73 g/L residual sugar; 8 g/L acidity; indigenous yeast fermentation; stainless steel vinification; six months on fine lees; vegan; Fair'n Green certified.
- Food Pairing: Pair with Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, pork schnitzel, roast pork, smoked trout, shellfish, washed-rind cheeses, or fruit-based desserts. The wine's combination of residual sweetness and bright acidity also makes it an excellent match for spicy dishes and can allow it to serve equally well as an aperitif or alongside a meal.
