I'm always on the look out for Chardonnay that is easy to drink, shows great minerality with lip smacking cut and acidity. If money were no object I wouldn't venture much out of Puligny Montrachet, but as the prices for those wines continue to skyrocket I've turned not only to Chablis but also to the Maconnais.
The Maconnais district is the most southern portion of Burgundy. The most recognized wine from this region is probably, Pouilly Fuisse or even straight Macon. I was introduced to a wine appelation, Pouilly Loche, which I had never heard of until yesterday when my rep brought in a compelling bottle from Domaine Clos des Rocs. This tiny appelation (32hectares) is a soil rich in limestone and clay which is the ideal soil for producing Chardonnay with great cut and finesse. The wines are leaner than their counterparts in neighboring Pouilly Fuisse and carry a hint of earth, yet they are quite rich in mineral, with enough fruit density to properly support the robust structural elements.
To say I was impressed was an understatement! The wine is so clean and easy to drink I nearly finished the entire bottle. Two customers that stopped in to pick up their wines guessed the price to be in the $60 range - it is really that good! I drink a lot of white wine and this is easily one of the most impressive new discoveries I have come across in quite some time.
