The 2001 Rocche dell’Annunziata presents a multitude of aromas and flavors including roses, minerals, smoke, tar and sweet red fruit in a stunning display of sensual elegance. Today it comes across as open-knit and incredibly expressive, showing tremendous overall harmony and balance. My impression is that this exquisite, superb Barolo is destined to take a place among the finest wines Scavino has ever produced. It is a great achievement.
While Scavino may be most famous for his Barolo Bric del Fiasc, to me his Riserva from the Rocche dell’Annunziata vineyard is his finest wine. With its typically perfumed nose, silky fruit and fine tannins, it is the most elegant and refined of Scavino’s Barolos. In general the Rocche dell’Annunziata is a wine with a broader drinking window, as is typical of Barolos from La Morra, although judging by the 1990 its early drinkability does not seem to compromise the wine’s aging potential. Several recent bottles of the 1998 and 1999 have been immensely enjoyable 96 points

(still in barrel) Good full red-ruby. Knockout nose reminded me of Musigny: cassis, blackberry, minerals and spices. Dense and thick but racy, thanks to superb acidity. Penetrating and superconcentrated, with sappy, vibrant black fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes with broad, extremely fine tannins and terrific length. High class! 93-96 points
