Marie Courtin Champagne Blanc de Noirs "Efflorescence" 2019

Marie Courtin

Marie Courtin has become a reference point for collectors interested in the more vinous, site-driven side of Champagne. Based in Polisot in the Côte des Bar, the estate is run by Dominique Moreau, who practices a very hands on approach from biodynamic farming to vinification and élevage. The winery is named after Dominique’s grandmother, Marie Courtin and reflects Moreau’s personal vision: single-varietal wines, native fermentations, minimal intervention, long aging, and zero dosage, all aimed at preserving clarity and precision.

Efflorescence is the domaine’s benchmark cuvée, produced entirely from Pinot Noir grown on clay-limestone soils. Vinified with indigenous yeasts and aged primarily in older barrels, it offers a Champagne that feels grounded and expressive rather than overtly aromatic. The palate leans toward orchard fruit, chalk, and subtle spice, with a savory, almost Burgundian texture that reflects both the grape and the winemaking. Zero dosage keeps the wine focused and structured, making it especially compelling with a few years of bottle age.

Concordance is also a 100% Pinot Noir cuvée and is distinguished by being bottled without added sulfur. This approach gives the wine a slightly more open and tactile profile, while still maintaining precision and freshness. Like Efflorescence, it is fermented with native yeasts and aged patiently before release, highlighting Pinot Noir in a pure, uncorrected form that resonates strongly with those looking for transparency and energy in their Champagne.

These are Champagnes made as wines first, built for evolution rather than immediate impact. For seasoned collectors who value authenticity, low intervention, and a clear sense of place, Efflorescence and Concordance are bottles that reward attention, time, and thoughtful cellaring. If you have not yet discovered this Estate, do yourself a favor and secure a few bottles today, you will be glad you did!

The 2019 Extra Brut Efflorescence shows the depth and textural resonance of this great vintage. Ample and layered in the glass, with tremendous substance, the Efflorescence has so much to offer. Red plum, mint, herbs and chamomile open gradually, but it is the wine's palate feel that impresses most. No dosage. Disgorged: April 2025; multiple disgorgements throughout the year.

The 2019 Extra Brut Concordance Sans Soufre is another deep, potent wine in this range from proprietor Dominique Moreau. The no-SO2 approach does not feel as successful here as it does in some of the other wines, perhaps because it appears to amplify the wilder, gamier side of Pinot. Sweet dried cherry, floral and earthy notes all build in the glass, framed by rough contours that further convey an impression of rusticity. At a bare minimum, this is a Champagne that requires an adventurous and inquisitive palate. I find other wines in this lineup more complete.
