Domaine Borgeot - Santenay
Last time I got this wine I had waited 3 years between vintages. I offered the 2023 at the end of last year, and it was sold out in 1 day!
I mentioned in my email on Wednesday that one of my favorite importers paid me a visit last week. He presented a number of his current releases, which you will see us offer in the coming days. What I had never seen before was his complete inventory list, which included a number of cherries he had obviously been holding back. As a national importer he is always thinking about being able to keep his distributors throughout the country happy. Sometimes they ask for the wine, sometimes they don’t. When I inquired about a few things I had spotted, he was reluctant to confirm immediately but ultimately did. And I could not be more pleased to offer them here for you today!
If you've followed my offers over the years, you have likely seen me write about Domaine Borgeot. It's still very much an under-the-radar producer (which I like), as it not only makes the wine incredibly affordable, I can actually get some quantity to sell!
From their Bourgogne Blanc to the Puligny-Montrachet, all the wines punch well above their weight. The wine opened my eyes to this Domaine was their 2017 Santenay Combe de la Dessus - it was an overwhelming success on the very first release. My only issue with it was, it took almost 3 years to get the next vintage, and then when I did, I got so little that it was gone in a matter of hours. So imagine my surprise when I spotted it on the master inventory list.
Part of what makes this wine so special is its location. Although labeled Santenay, the vineyard sits immediately against the Chassagne-Montrachet border on limestone-rich soils that share many of the same geological characteristics you'd expect from the 1er Cru Chassagne Montrachet vineyards. The cool airflow from the nearby combe preserves freshness while allowing the Chardonnay to develop remarkable depth, giving the wine an unmistakably Côte de Beaune profile without the Chassagne price tag.
Stylistically, it checks every box I look for in white Burgundy. Bright citrus, crisp orchard fruit, and chalky minerality are supported by vibrant acidity and a finish that is downright outrageous Quite simply, this would put a great deal of $100+ wines to shame!
Like I said earlier, the last time I offered this stuff it was gone in 1 day. Judging by how fast the offer from Wednesday disappeared, this one might not make it until noon! Buy more than you think you could use, as I don't know when I'll have it available again. 13cs Arriving Today.
Clos de la Comme Dessus is a prized lieu-dit located on the northern edge of Santenay, immediately adjacent to the Chassagne-Montrachet border and just above the Premier Cru vineyard Beauregard. Its elevated position benefits from cool air descending through the nearby combe (dry valley) as well as the moderating influence of the Bois Dessus forest, creating a longer growing season that preserves freshness and aromatic complexity. Predominantly Oxfordian limestone soils provide exceptional drainage while imparting the pronounced mineral character that has become the hallmark of this vineyard. The combination of site, exposure, and limestone-rich soils consistently produces one of Santenay's most distinguished expressions of Chardonnay.
