Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc "Roussanne Vieilles Vignes" 2024

Chateau de Beaucastel

It has been a while since I have offered the Beaucastel Roussanne Vieilles Vignes, and I will admit I had almost forgotten how special this wine can be. A friend poured the 2005 at a recent dinner and the wine was pure magic. The density, the layered honeyed richness, the complexity all balanced with brilliant acidity, makes for one of the truly great white wine experiences. I promised my friend I would find some, and am pleased to offer today the 2024 Beaucastel Roussanne Vieilles Vignes.

The Vieilles Vignes bottling comes from Roussanne vines planted in 1909, among the oldest in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and it is one of the rare white wines from the southern Rhône built for genuine long-term aging. Jacques Perrin first isolated this old-vine parcel decades ago because the fruit was simply too good to blend away, and the family has kept it separate ever since. What you get is a wine of real weight and richness, layered with notes of beeswax, white flowers, and ripe stone fruit, but carried by a mineral spine and enough acidity to keep it honest rather than heavy. It is a Roussanne with pedigree, the kind of wine that rewards a few years in the cellar and then keeps rewarding you for another decade or two after that.

The 2024 is young now, but if that 2005 taught me anything, it is that patience with this wine pays off in a big way. This is a connoisseur's wine, the kind you tuck away and forget about until the right dinner, years from now, calls for something extraordinary. If you have never experienced an aged Beaucastel Roussanne, this is your chance to start that journey.

The 2024 Chateauneuf du Pape Roussanne Vieilles Vignes is broad and dramatic, bursting with aromas of smoke, spices, ripe white fruits, confit citrus and nutmeg. Full-bodied, layered and unctuous, with a fleshy, enveloping core of fruit framed by saline acidity, it’s a terrific white wine—and a strong contender for wine of the vintage.

The 2024 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Roussanne Vieilles Vignes is the white wine of the vintage. Fragrant chamomile, linden blossom, lemon flesh, jasmine and a trace of cedar are all pushed forward. Herbal tea adds even more complexity. Perfumed and refined, the full-bodied 2024 caresses the palate with impressive intensity and vibrancy, closing with a sleek saline touch on the long, focused finale.
