2021 & 2022 Domaine Bachey Legros

In 2023, for one of our customary wine luncheons, typically blinded, a customer of mine brought a bottle of the 2020 Bachey Legros Chassagne 1er Les Petits Clos. To say it outperformed is an understatement. It stood toe to toe with the Lefliave & Ramonet and I’ll go as far to say it was better than both the Lafon and Boillot. It left such an impression on me that I organized a trip to the domaine in Santenay a few months later in an effort to educate myself about this incredible wine.

I met with Samuel Legoros who explained that his brother and he farm 19 hectares spread over 3 communes (Santenay, Maranges and Chassagne Montchet) where they grow both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The prize of the Domaine is a 2 hectare lieu dits, “Les Petits Clos.” It is located in the upper middle section of Morgeot, just below Les Grands Ruchottes, and La Romanee. Here there is the perfect balance of calcare (limestone) which brings the freshness and minerality mixed with some clay and deeper soils that gives the wine richness and body. It’s this perfect soil combination, along with the old vines and low yields that deliver such an amazing white Burgundy experience.
