2020 Marquis d’ Angerville
“I too have long thought that the d'Angerville 2010s may be the best wines made here in the 21st Century but the breathtakingly good 2020s may indeed one day supplant them. While it's no surprise given the outstanding consistency from one vintage to another of the Clos des Ducs and Taillepieds, but they again appear to be the class of the cellar. With that said, if you can find the Champans, don't pass on it either!”

It's been some time since I’ve seen this sort of enthusiasm and such high praise bestowed upon any wine from the Cote de Beaune. But then again when you are talking about one of the greatest estates in all of Burgundy, nothing should be surprising. In short these are some of the best wines to have ever been produced by this Estate. I’ll apologize now as quantities are ridiculously small. These are surly wines you are going to want in your cellar. Burgundy does not get a whole lot better no matter what it says on the label. In stock next week!
2020 Angerville Volnay 1er Taillepieds
This is even spicier with a terrific range of floral elements as well on the aromas of plum, violet and ripe dark raspberry. The firm, focused and almost painfully intense mineral-driven flavors are at once chiseled and breathtakingly long on the balanced, compact, austere and built-to-age finale. This is absolutely superb though note well that this is a wine to allow at least 7 to 8 years first as it's presently a block; a beautiful and very classy block, but a block nonetheless.
- Burghound, 93-96 Don’t Miss. Outstanding!
2020 Angerville Volnay 1er Clos Ducs
An exuberantly floral nose combines notes of rose petal, violet, lavender, earth, clove and black cherry liqueur. The almost painfully intense, sappy and muscular big-bodied mouth coating flavors brim with minerality on the explosively long and balanced finish that is less youthfully austere than usual. Even so, the supporting tannins are prominent and leave no doubt that this is going to mature gracefully if slowly. This stunningly good Clos des Ducs is a clear candidate for the best Côte de Beaune red in the 2020 vintage.
- Burghound, 94-97 Don’t Miss. Outstanding!
There is a whiff of exotic spice sitting atop the ripe aromas of black raspberry coulis, violet, orange peel and Asian-style tea. The caressing but solidly energetic middle weight plus flavors manage to be at once elegant yet powerful before culminating in an equally austere, compact and beautifully well-balanced finale. This beauty of a Champans is also going to need at least 7 to 8 years of patience and should be more than capable of rewarding 12 to 15.
- Burghound, 93-95 Sweet Spot Outstanding!
