There are some pretty extraordinary wines discounted 15% in this category of onesie-twosies, ranging from DRC to Donnhoff and in price from $2,500 - $20 (before the discount).
Jacques Frederic Mugnier Musigny is a wine I’ve followed closely over my career since first visiting Burgundy in 1998. There was a time this wine flew under the radar, but since 2005 it has become one of the most sought after Grand crus.
In an attempt to slow down its consumption Mouisseur Mugnier has implemented a strategy of holding the wine back at least 5 years before its release. He implemented this starting with the 2013 vintage. While 7 years is nowhere near a great Musigny’s peak, it definitely is a head start on where it's going.
For a while, some in the Burgundy world were lukewarm about the 2017 vintage, especially with a very ripe, flamboyant vintage like 2015 on so many collectors' minds. But as time has begun to reveal, this is very much a classically styled vintage that will simply take a few more years in the cellar to reveal its true magic. I remember people knocking the 2001’s and look at how those have turned out!
Add one of the great wines to your cellar!
A superbly spicy nose combines a wide range of elements that include red and dark cherry, raspberry, lavender, violet, tea and sandalwood as well as a hint of herbal tea character. The super-sleek yet almost painfully intense and powerful big-bodied flavors are shaped by impressively fine-grained tannins on the youthfully austere finish where the power does a slow build from the mid-palate. This is very classy juice; indeed it's a Musigny of evident distinction.

A wine that transcends the vintage, Mugnier's 2017 Musigny Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes wafts from the glass with aromas of wild strawberries, cherry, rose petal, wild blueberries, blood orange and warm spices. On the palate, it's full-bodied, multidimensional and stunningly pure, caressing the palate with its silky tannins and generous core of crystalline fruit, concluding with a resonant, fragrant finish. It's a magical Musigny that left me stammering.
