Dönnhoff
Today, we have two new arrivals from THE biggest name in German wine, at knockout pricing! Vins Rare’s lifelong focus has been Burgundy, but I have been drinking far too many excellent German wines. I do realize, it’s hard for my Burgundy buyers to believe that climate change is dramatically and quickly changing wines in many regions previously marginalized but now suddenly POPPING!I
Dönhoff has always made me smile, especially because we’ve had so many outstanding experiences. VinsRare plans to explore these wines more. Stay tuned.
For now, today’s offering is a Pre-Arrival of two of Dönnhoff’s wines from 2021 and 2022, both warm and outstanding vintages, perfect for northern climates benefiting from our warmer climate. Please find my personal notes about each below, under the respective wine.
2022 Dönnhoff Riesling Oberhauser Leistenberg Kabinett
Stand back as this riesling lightning strike arrives. Complex nose of dried flowers and summer meadows. Ripe and juicy, but also very elegant and crisp with stunning mineral freshness at the very long pointed finish. Delicious, but also excellent potential. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Leistenberg Kabinett beckons with a white peach hint on the nose. The palate is serene, edging its peachiness with lemon fruit and zest, tingling with stone and coating the mouth with an astringent, delicious acidity. This lovely high-wire act juxtaposes 9+ g/l of acidity with full-fruited, citric sweetness. The sinuses almost short-circuit between acidity and fruit. Helmut says, "I would never have thought in that summer that this would work. I never expected this." This is the benefit of this lateral valley and its east-exposition. To him, Kabinett is a "particular talent" of this vineyard. The 2022 is simply lovely, balanced, vivid and delicious.

A crisp refreshing wine that offers everything that is the Dönnhoff style. I shake my head at the quality of this wine and it always amazes me that a wine of this pedigree can sell for $25. With the warm weather just around the corner this is one to consider.

2021 Dönnhoff Riesling Oberhauser Brucke Spatlese
Pure, precise and bright on the nose, with delicately flinty and spicy aromas, the 2021 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese is a fabulously piquant and stimulating Spätlese with mineral intensity, complexity, grip and tension, as if there were electric wires in this wine. It's enormously vital and stimulating. 8.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.

It always possesses great energy, never heavy and an absolute joy to drink! Again another world class wine from a world class producer. Delicious wine!
