Brovia 2021

Our Italian section has been looking a little thin lately, and once we turned our attention to Barolo, it was almost impossible to overlook Brovia. Extraordinary vineyards, a historic estate, and generations of tradition capture so much of what makes Italian wine special. What sold us was the chance to show Brovia from two sides—one wine that draws on some of the estate's best material, and another that takes you deep into one remarkable piece of land.

And 2021 is the vintage to see it in. The year gave Nebbiolo ripe fruit, freshness and structure, with the clarity to let individual vineyards hold onto their identity—one of the more complete recent vintages for Barolo, and a real high point for the appellation.

You don't have to go far up the ladder to feel it. The 2021 Barolo gives you a serious look at Brovia without starting at the top of the lineup. Roughly 70% comes from younger vines in Brea, the Serralunga vineyard behind Ca'Mia, with the balance from wine left over after the estate fills its cru casks. It has real energy—aromatic, bright, already showing complexity—and the structure you expect from Barolo, with an openness that makes it especially inviting.

Rocche di Castiglione is where Brovia comes into focus. One steep, sandy piece of Castiglione Falletto, vines dating to 1966, bottled separately since 1970. This is the more lifted, finely drawn side of Brovia—perfumed, silky, precise, with detail that keeps unfolding in the glass. Red fruit, flowers and spice on the nose; depth and quiet intensity on the palate that builds with time. There's plenty of pleasure already, and the trajectory from here looks just as exciting.
